Marsupilisation of Bartholin's Gland Cyst

Anyone had this procedure? I'm just over 2wks post OP. Had day surgery and a GA. Hurt like hell for the first week but the effects of the GA were worse! Anyway, I got a script for antibiotics after week 1 as I saw a thick yellow discharge. No check from the GP. Then last week when I returned to work I insisted the nurse take a look. Stitches were still in place and still v painful but she said it looked clean and was healing. Yesterday I tried to get a good luck and the stitches seem to have gone and when I pressed gently on the painful area a thick yellow discharge came out. Same again today. Does anyone know if this is normal drainage or could it still be infection? I don't have a temperature or anything just quite sore still!

I would go back early in the week. When I had mine I had no discharge from the wound site once the packing had been removed.

Thanks. I didnt have any packing. Just the stitches. It's so annoying. I just want it to be healed!

@JustJo2019 I haven’t had this done yet but am on a waiting list but from what I’ve read the continued discharge could be a sign of injection or that the gland isn’t draining properly out of the new duct they’ve created? Definitely worth getting it checked out again.

Do you mind me asking how the procedure itself was? Did you have an abscess at the time of the op or just a cyst?

*Infection

Hi, no I had a cyst which I had actually had for 13yrs! It was getting larger and beginning to cause pain. I went to get it checked in early Feb and had the op in the 26th Feb. I went in at 12.30, was in theatre about 2.30, Recovery at 3pm, back on the ward after about half an hour then back home for 5pm. The nice anesthetist put some injection into the wound so I didn't feel pain until late the same night. I can't take painkillers, they make me sick, so I didn't take any at all. The pain was tolerable for me, just! It's very sore after and very swollen. I bought a sitz bath from Amazon which was brilliant. I took a bath in a morning, used the sitz bath at lunch and a bath after tea. Baths really help! It will be 3wks tomorrow and I just have a stinging pain and most of the swelling has gone. The stitches only dissolved a couple of days ago. It does seem to be draining quite a lot. I think I bled for about 5 days. My cyst was large, about the size of a plum I would say. I actually cannot really tell where the cut is. I have to search for it. I thought I would be cut and stitched towards the outside, but it seems to be quite deep inside. The stitches were very annoying! Hope your op goes well. Good luck. It's not as bad as I thought it would be

Thank you @JustJo2019 and glad you didn’t find the op as bad as expected. I hope yours settles down now. I’ve had my cyst since 2011 and it’s only started getting large and painful since October. Really strange. The joys of being a woman hey!

JustJo2019 · 19/03/2019 07:20

Aren't we lucky! I'm still seeing some drainage but it is continuing to feel less painful and as I don't feel unwell in myself I'm assuming it's normal and not infected as surely the pain would increase and I would get unwell?

Yes I’ve never had an infection in mine (seems to be a blocked duct that’s the problem) but from all the reading up I’ve done on them apparently it’s agony so pretty sure you’d know about it! Keep an eye on it and don’t take any chances if it starts to get hot or swollen.
