Progesterone only pill

Hi, I just changed from the combined pill to the progesterone only pill. On day 3 of taking it my period started, the dr did say they may be all over the place for a while, but do they settle down. What are other people's experience of them. I don't want loads of periods as I get bad headaches with them!

It's hard to say as varies for everyone. I was having a 'period' every five weeks but they were lasting 12 days! My sister on other hand, her periods stopped completely which is one known side effected, so as I say affects women differently. I have gone back recently onto the combined pill as I couldn't handle that amount of bleeding.

anomoony · 15/02/2019 22:34

My periods stopped and then after a couple of years I had a Niagara of a period and bled all over the supermarket floor and then no period again for a couple of years.

Yeh it's hard to say isn't it, just I just finished a heavy period on the combined pill and then day 3 on the po pill another heavy one I feel shattered, hope it settles down.

I really didn’t get on with the pop I tried. It gave me 2 heavy periods every month and I also gained a lot of weight. Why did you change from the combined? Was it not agreeing with you?

midnightgirl · 16/02/2019 08:42

I had to change because of my age 46! I hung on to it for as long as I could. As I was good on it and it helped my periods, but my blood pressure started to up and well I'm too old for it now so had to try it. I hope to god it settles down

Your bleeding pattern can be irregular up until 6 months of taking it. Whatever pattern you have after 6 months will remain and it likely won't improve after that. Spotting and irregular bleeding is common at first especially after switching pills. When I took it I did spot for a while and had no bleeding most of the time. You should give it a few months to see how you settle with it.

Pinkginxx · 16/02/2019 08:56

I went from having short (2-3 days) but v.painful periods on combined to having very light and painless but sooooo long (10-12 days) on the POP.

UnperfectLife · 16/02/2019 09:29

Took me a good few months to settle down- if i took one late i would get spotting a few days later. Been on for about 2 years now. Seems to have 'built up' so no spotting if I take one a bit late... but if I completely missed one, I imagine there'd be a bit of a bleed.
If you can get into a good habit of taking at a regular time each night, then i'd say it's excellent. No periods for me. No weight gain. No side effects. But you have to get into a reliable habit/ routine and take it round about the same time every day- weekdays, weekends and holidays etc. Maybe set an alarm or reminder on your phone?

midnightgirl · 16/02/2019 09:52

Thanks, yeh I'm pretty good at that especially with having other pills to take. Fingers crossed it will settle. Thank god it is the weekend

I had irregular but often bleeding for the first six months then periods stopped altogether.

I've been on it 5 years now and occasionally if I take a pill too late I'll have a teeny bit of brown spotting for a day but haven't bled for 4.5yrs.

Very frustrating at the beginning but absolutely worth it in the end.

Thisisthelaststraw · 16/02/2019 10:03

I was on it for a year for heavy periods/large fibroid. Bled for 28 days when I started it then nothing for a year. Gained some weight but already overweight so hard to tell how much.

Out of the blue had a period from hell. Could sit for 5 mins and when I’d stand then I’d soak through pad, clothes, down my legs. I thought I was dying! Large clots the size of the palm of my hand (sorry for tmi).

It stopped after I was put on some injection to induce menopause. Not sure what doc will suggest next but it wasn’t great for that year. Sorry not very helpful.

Thisisthelaststraw · 16/02/2019 10:04

Sorry.. “it was great for that year”

Pashazade · 16/02/2019 10:09

I've been on Cerazette or whatever pop I get given of similar type and never have periods ever. Been about 6 years now and no issues at all.

NeverSayFreelance · 16/02/2019 10:27

I had to switch to the POP when the combined pill was giving me real mental health issues and made my already horrendous periods even heavier. Personally I still get a period every month but they are very light, not painful, and generally easy to contend with. However they are irregular. I've been on it over a year and they still haven't fallen into any sort of pattern. Sometimes I get two in one month, sometimes I don't get any for 8 weeks. But for me that's still an improvement over what I had before. Persist with it for now and see how you get on.

olivo · 16/02/2019 10:53

I switched from combined a few months ago. I had a few days very very scant blessing about 4 weeks in, then nothing since. Just the result I was hoping for!

olivo · 16/02/2019 10:54

Sorry, posted too soon. They say it can take around 3 months to settle, give it a go!

MilkItTilITurnItIntoCheese · 16/02/2019 10:55

I'm on day 13 of pop. I'm taking it alongside using a coil to hopefully help with really bad pmt. Started taking it on cd3 so was already bleeding. Now bleeding again already 😭😭. I'm expecting irregular bleeding at first and was told to hang in there for 3-6 months to see if it settles. It could be a long 6 months at this rate but hopefully will be worth it if it stops me bleeding at all. I'm almost 45 so combined pill was a no-no.

Georgiemcgeorgeface · 16/02/2019 11:04

I'm on month 5. Shaky start with quite frequent bleeding varying between heavy and light. Forth month no bleeding for over 40 days and then about 5-6 days of spotting. I'm still hoping it settled as I read it can take 6 months. I still get some pms symptoms but nothing like I was before. I went on it due to heavy bleeding and significant pms

midnightgirl · 16/02/2019 15:36

Thank you ladies I guess will just have to see how it goes. Fingers crossed 🤞
