bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy - post menopause

Hello, I am 53 years of age and I am scheduled to have one or both ovaries removed tomorrow morning. I definitely have to have one removed as I have four cysts in one ovary. I am in menopause and have been for the last two years. My dilemma is this: I have the choice of removing the affected ovary or removing both. I am still unsure as to which option to go for.
Will having both ovaries removed increase my menopausal symptoms?
Has anyone else gone through this op post menopause?

Prob too late now- but ideally you should keep one.

How did it go?

MissMarplesBloomers · 14/01/2019 18:03

If you are post menopause they are both defunct & saves the risk of cancer in the remaining ovary I would have thought.

The risk of ovarian cancer increases with age so while they are removing the one get them both out, IMHO but what did your surgeon advise?

Whatever you decided hope all went well you are not feeling too sore!

I hope the op went well OP. Thanks

What did you decide in the end?

Limassol65 · 15/01/2019 04:00

In the end we decided to take out both . Hormonal levels were so low there was no reason to keep it in . I am happy with the decision I made I am actually not too sore at all . Thank you

presumably you will start HRT as the ovaries still have some functions right into old age.

You made the right decision .

Limassol65 · 15/01/2019 19:46

We are hoping as hormone levels low HRT not needed . I have avoided taking them up to now so hope I can carry on without them . I feel I definitely made the right choice
