Mechanics of the pill and using it to skip periods?

How does this work? Because I’ve just taken 2 packets back to back and my ‘period’ started only about 3 days later than it would have if I’d taken the usual break!!!
I thought the breakthrough bleed was caused by the drop in hormones when you stop taking it, but if I’ve carried on taking it what’s going on? I’ve successfully skipped a period on this pill before, but on my previous pill it never worked.
Before I had kids I used to skip periods all the time, but in the 7 years since I’ve had kids it’s become less and less reliable. I assume those 2 facts are related!

Any suggestions? Is it time to say goodbye to the pill and try something else? (I’m 39 and will be having no more children)

I'm no expert but I used to do the same thing years ago. I think my gp at the time said it was my cycle 'overriding' the pill?
