Options for resolving very low mood caused by PMS

I’m off to see the GP to see if I can get some help with this but I thought it might help if I go armed with some options to discuss.

I’ve been feeling totally depressed and helpless/hopeless for a week or so before my period. I was previously on hormonal contraception about 10 years ago and came off it because I felt like low-level crap all the time, rather than the ups and downs I get now. I know that’s likely to be the first suggestion. The other symptoms that are affecting everyday life (as opposed to just being annoying) are very disrupted sleep during this time.

Are there other options that might help - whether contraceptive or not? My family is complete so I’m not concerned about ongoing fertility.

Perhaps ask this to be moved to Women's Health?

There are many of us suffering from PMS - and in some cases perimenopause (there is also a Menopause page).

How old are you? That might affect the answers you get.

I've never had pms since I started Yasmin pill 5 years ago,It works for me

Thanks hippospot.

I’m approaching 38. I’d be surprised if I was peri menopausal - my mum, whom I take after in every other possible respect, started much later. Plus my youngest is only just two and I fell pregnant pretty easily.

St John’s Wort. Honestly I thought it wouldn’t do anything but it’s transformed me!

Loony thanks. I’ve also been told agnus castus. I’m taking that now and not helping so far but perhaps I’m expecting too much of alternative medicine?

I’ll talk all of these through with the GP.
