Mirena - no period for 3yrs & now awful pain

I'm hoping someone can help me with this.

I used to have really terrible period pain. I was even in hospital and given morphine once which didn't even help. But they did diagnose bowel disease so I don't know if that had something to do with that particular one being so bad. They were all really bad though.
I have had the mirena for nearly 3 years now. It's been great because I haven't had any periods at all apart from the first couple of months. So I haven't had any pain or bleeding.
But since yesterday I've had terrible cramping and my period has started again. I can barely move. The only way I can cope with the pain is in the bath but I can't stay there forever!
I don't know if this means there is something wrong with the mirena? I would go to the gp but they are not the nicest and would probably just say something along the lines of why are you here just for a painful period. Plus I can only get an appointment for 3 weeks time.
Did anyone get a period after a long time of not having one on the mirena? Is this normal?
Thank you

Has anyone ever mentioned the word "endometriosis" to you; that is the first thing I thought of when I read your symptoms and it is a common cause of ongoing and severe period pains. This can also affect the intestines causing abdominal pain. You need a diagnosis first and foremost and for that you need to see a gynae.

If your GP is unhelpful and not nice I would change GP practice now.

The mirena is sometimes given to women in such circumstances but its not a treatment. I would find another GP practice to register at and ask them for a referral to a gynae. Do not be put off or otherwise fobbed off.

I would also keep a daily pain and symptom diary noting everything in the event you do not already do this.
