Should I go to GP for another test - cystitis

I've had cystitis for a week now, it got quite bad last weekend when I was weeing red (blood) and nauseous. I've had 3 days of Nitrofurantoin, course finished yesterday but I still feel rough.

I'm feeling absolutely wiped out - low grade fever (around 37.7, but I'm normally more low 36s) all week, shaky, exhausted by the slightest activity, feel a bit feverish. Still feel nauseous. Heart rate 105. Feel shaky after activity like the short school run (in the car). I've got permanent back pain anyway so can't tell if I've got kidney pain, I do have lower stomach pain.

Our GPs is very very busy. Should I go back tomorrow for another test, or is this standard post-infection and I just need to wait it out? Haven't had cystitis in years, but 15+ years ago I had a few kidney infections. Can't remember what normal recovery feels like.

Forgot to add the burning whilst seeing has mainly gone, except for the last few drops, and a feeling of pressure.

They should have sent off your previous urine specimen, did they ask for one? Because you may have grown a bug resistant to Nitro. I would go to the surgery, ask for a urine kit, do a spec and fill out a form ( they should have one) detailing whole trajectory of symptoms and treatment. I would also ask to be seen. You have ( an albeit) old history of kidney infections. No GP or practice nurse would not want to see you , given your symptoms.
Hope that helps. All the best, sounds grim.

Also, I should add, not knowing your age, but if over 40, they should be checking another urine spec in 3 weeks to see if the blood in your urine ( it may not be obvious to you), has cleared up.

Thanks Grammar I'm late 30s.

I took in a specimen, and the GP did a dip test but didn't send it to be analysed (they send them home with us to dispose of). My back is aching quite a bit now, so given that, and what you've said, I think I will go in tomorrow.

Are you still getting UTI symptoms? Honestly I would be considering getting an OOH appointment for this evening, I would be worried that there was a kidney infection brewing and apart from anything it sounds miserable for you!

Pollaidh · 22/11/2018 17:01

The UTI symptoms (burning pain whilst weeing) are much much less now - I don't need to go to the loo very much, and when I do it's not burney to wee except for the very last drops.

Back aching - I would also be worried that this has spread to being a kidney infection.

Get an OOH appointment this evening, don't wait for tomorrow.

DwangelaForever · 22/11/2018 17:04

Deffo go back my mum got sepsis from an untreated urine infection that spread to her kidneys!

Northernlass69 · 22/11/2018 17:15

I would say you need a different antibiotic. Don't leave it.

seven201 · 22/11/2018 18:42

3 days isn't a very long course of antibiotics. I'd ring ooh so you can have a dose of something tonight.

I've had many urine and kidneys infections, and three kidney surgeries. Even 2 weeks after surgery I managed to convince myself I didn't have an infection, despite throwing up and having a fever and feeling like shit. I did of course. So stupid. Much easier to deal with infections early on.

Pollaidh · 22/11/2018 22:21

Thanks all. I've perked up a bit and my heart rate's down to 90, so going to go first thing tomorrow morning.

Did they sort it out for you? Are you feeling better?

Pollaidh · 30/11/2018 19:35

Ah thank you, yes. Got another type of AB and they sent off for testing. Feeling about 90% normal now.

Thanks for your advice.
