So I had my first smear - two years late, incredibly irresponsible of me I know! A week later a letter arrives from the hospital for an apt three days later?? I’m impressed with the NHS but also made me quite nervous. So I went in today, three of the nicest nurses I’ve come across. Ever so friendly and informative. One was being shadowed by a more experienced nurse and she kept asking about a mosaic so ofc I ask what she’s talking about. She tells me it suggests there’s high grade something or other and they need to take a biopsy.. four pinches later and they’re done. Now I’m sh**ng myself and results take up to 6 weeks!? Anyone else had a similar experience? Please help!!

I had a colcoscopy and biopsy yesterday after an abnormal smear result. Mine was low grade changes though and I'm likely to be referred back for a smear in a year's time. I've got to wait up to 4 weeks for the biopsy results to confirm this though. Remember that cell changes are not cancer, they have the potential to be and this is why smear test and follow-up procedures are important, as they mean that cells can be removed before they have the chance to become anything more sinister. They may invite you back for another procedure to remove a slightly larger area (large loop excision of the transformation zone, or LLETZ) depending on what the biopsy shows.
