I really need to get on some contraception. DD is 5 months. I can only use mini version of the pill due to family history of blood clots and it makes me HORRIBLY depressed. Its the reason I fell pregnant with Dd i Came off it as it makes me moody, irritable, dramatic and even suicidal. It worsens my anxiety and after having DD I took it for 3 weeks and even my partner said come off it, i wasnt myself at all. Its made me scared to use contraception, I need to though so Im thinking of the coil if anyone has experience of that? I need anything that wont affect my hormones so drastically. x

Copper coil has no hormones.

Aargh! You will get people trying to scare you off even considering the coil, but I love it and am on my third. No side effects, nothing to remember, extremely reliable, instantly reversible. I've never had an issue, insertion is a little crampy but otherwise fine, removal is very quick and easy.

I went off the pill just because it flattened my sex drive and I much prefer the coil because it doesn't affect my hormones.

@Countess Yeah my mum had one fitted due to heavy periods and she said it was the best thing shes ever done.

Not bothered about insertion birth was bad enough Grin but then on the other hand Ive heard horror stories of them becoming infected.

How would I go about getting one? GP?

I've used both types of coil. Copper was great, no hormonal issues at all, fertility restored immediately on removal. But it did give me very heavy periods (and I think a little anaemia as a result). Had it for 5 years, very happy.

I now have the Mirena coil which has far less hormone in it than any pill and which apparently acts largely locally to the uterus as opposed to being delivered systemically.

I am one of the few who continue to have periods on it but they are very very light. No weight gain or other issues you might expect from hormonal contraception. I'm converted and will use Mirena till menopause now.

Removal of coils is easy. I recommend you give either a try. Persist though, it took more than 6 months for both to 'settle' for me.

That sounds like she had the mirena coil which does have hormones. The copper coil doesn't have any. I went to a family planning clinic for my mirena
