Menstrual cups

iguanabanana · 27/09/2018 17:31

I can feel my first period in 2 or more years brewing - (ivf drugs, pregnancy and breastfeeding). Dreading it- I tend to be V heavy with 2/3 of floody days each month.

Can anybody recommend a menstrual cup- which is the best make/type?

TIA

this one here . all the best

I’ve tried just 2 brands but I really like my Lunette Cup. I am quite heavy for the first day but I found the cup much better than anything else.

bookgirl1982 · 28/09/2018 21:35

There is a Facebook group called put a cup in it that has a quiz to suggest a cup based on your needs

ThrowThoseCurtainsWide · 28/09/2018 21:35

I adore my lunette! I have had to trim the stem pretty much all of the way off otherwise it pokes out and feels weird. I've used it for 3 years now and I wouldn't go back. There's been a few occasions where I've got caught out at work and had to borrow a tampon and they feel so horrible compared to my cup!

pennydrew · 28/09/2018 22:56

Just a note on cups. There is a recommendation to have 2, sterilising after each time you empty and having one ready. This is what I do now.

SleepingBooty · 28/09/2018 23:10

I had a mooncup for about 12 years, it was brilliant. Changed to a Lunette, just as good absolutely no problems. I cannot bear the stem though.

Anonymumtum · 28/09/2018 23:13

Sterilising after each time I empty 😱

Nah, I’ve lasted 12 years and not even sterilised it once...

WeShouldOpenABar · 28/09/2018 23:16

Yeah nobody is talking about sterilising tampons my mooncup will survive its occasional Milton bath when I remember as will my vagina

Mammysin · 28/09/2018 23:16

Bought a Mooncup nearly a year ago ( am 43) . Brilliant - no horrible stinky tampons,no dryness- wish I'd done it sooner...

Temporaryanonymity · 28/09/2018 23:20

I have a mooncup. I have no idea how it compares to other brands but I am happy with it. I wouldn't go back to tampons now.

StarTastic · 28/09/2018 23:22

I've got a tulip cup it's life changing. I'll never go back to tampons ever

LauraPalmersBodybag · 28/09/2018 23:33

@Pennydrew I think you’re mistaken. Both Mooncup and Divacup recommend sterilising at the start of your cycle and the end if want. www.putacupinit.com advise sterilising if you want to. The main thing is to wash it with warm water and non scented soap between use.

Op, I don’t have a very heavy flow, but from my exp using one for 10 years, you just check and empty more often. I have a friend who wears a pad on days she’s more likely to flood. They’re so simple to use and create such little waste - I think everyone should have one.

iguanabanana · 29/09/2018 00:15

Oh thanks ladies, I did use one about 5 years ago but fell out of love with it (unfairly) when i developed some nasty gynae problems- my mum was convinced it was the hippy dippy cups fault!!
I'm looking forward to giving it a try and your replies have given me some good pointers.

I've got the cup in the link. I'm really happy with it.

pennydrew · 29/09/2018 07:28

No I’m not confused. A warning came out this year as women mistakenly think we can’t get TSS from menstrual cups. There have in fact been cases of it, much reduced risk then tampons of course, so that is the reason for the warning. I never got TSS from tampons either, doesn’t mean it isn’t a risk. I only empty twice on a real heavy day anyway, so I have two cups with one sterilised ready. I got the special sterilising thing from one of the brands ( through earthwise girls website ) and sterilise using a microwave. It’s easy and extra safe.
