Depro injection pros & cons

I am considering having this injection for contraception purposes and wondered of anyone else uses it and how it affects them. I have had the implant but I got immediate bad migraines and had it removed after a few weeks. My dd has just had her first injection, but this is because she has really heavy periods. It doesn't appear to have affected her adversely.

I found it great for periods and obviously contraceptive- once it's done you can forget for 3 months!
I also didn't get on with the implant for the same reasons.
Only downside for me was that I felt it made me constantly hungry - I put on quite a bit of weight on it.
So it didn't directly cause the weight gain but it certainly made me want to eat more!

I’ve been on and off it for 12 years and absolutely love it. No downsides for me.

Thats good to hear. I would worry about the putting on weight part, as I am already overweight. I'll see if anyone else replies and then make an appointment to chat to someone about it.

I put on weight on the injection. My doctor said that I would probably put on about five pounds . I was on the injection for two years and put on two and a half stone.
When I stopped taking the injection, I lost weight
In addition , my sexual libido decreased

It's the same hormone, surely the injection would also give you headaches?

I did it the other way round, had injection but didn't get along with it and doctor suggested implant and said that it releases a much lower amount of hormone and therefore side effects are less likely.

Pros : stopped my periods
Cons : I piled on weight, I developed awful acne, I was moody and horrible.

I had implant removed too. That hormone just doesn't agree with me.

Made me bleed all the time and put on a ton of weight (It is known that it can cause weight gain). You shouldn't be on it for years at a time as it can affect bone density too. If you are planning any more children then it can delay return to fertility for a year or more once it is stopped

longtompot · 03/09/2018 18:27

I'm 46 and have three grown up kids so not wanting to have any more.
Does it have the same medication as the implant? That puts a bit of a spanner in my plan :(
I read about the bone density issue but that as soon as you stop having the injection, it comes back again

Yeah they both use progestogen. Injection gives you 3 months worth in one go which is why my GP said side affects are worse than slow release in implant.

dementedpixie · 03/09/2018 18:33

Nexplanon contains the active ingredient etonogestrel.

Depo-Provera injection contains the active ingredient medroxyprogesterone acetate

They are different hormones so may have a different effect

I had bleeding with depo but cerazette stopped my periods. Different hormones, even if both progesterone, can have different outcomes

I had the injection for twelve years. I had a bone density scan and all was fine. I was persuaded to try the implant by my gp. It was a nightmare. I put on two stone and for a post bariatric surgery person that is a big deal. I was an emotional nightmare who was bleeding for 16/19 days each month.

I had it removed and have gone back on the injection. The bleeding stopped immediately but I have been having migraines just after I have the injection for a few days. For me though I feel far better. My body doesn't agree with hormones but there are less to deal with and they don't last as long with the injection.

I went batshit crazy after having the depo... at least with the pill / coil etc you can stop or get it out. This I was stuck with and hubby said I was an emotional nightmare... And I got fat.
