Wind pain 3 weeks after laparoscopy

Hi

Had a laparoscopy for endo and had an ovarian cyst removed three weeks ago. Had the agonising wind pain that can travel up to your shoulders from the CO2 for a few days after. Then in second week intestinal wind pain kicked in. Now 3 weeks feels worse, the gas bubbles moving out actually feel like I'm being stabbed internally and been off work a couple of days. Taking windeze now and pharmacist also gave me lacutlose but as I've not got constipation and I read that can cause wind I've stopped it.

Just wondered if it's normal for it to last this long? I have mild MS. Hoping my guts haven't been placed back in a wonky way or anything.

If the shoulder pain is gone then what you're experiencing now probably isn't anything to do with the co2 (it's eliminated by being absorbed into the blood & exhaled). The pneumoperitoneum is usually gone in a few days, but can take a bit longer occasionally. Handling you bowels during the operation & opioid pain relief can stun your guts for a while though & it takes a while to get going again so this may be what going on. Of course if you are unwell you should actually see a doctor. Perhaps best to speak to the ward you were on for the surgery.

I’d go back and see your GP. I react very badly to the gas and have severe pain for up to a week after each surgery, can’t lie down flat for at least the first five days. I’ve never had gas Pain last longer than 8 days though. Are you sure you’re not constipated at all?

Try peppermint tea and have a bath. The pain from one of mine lasted absolutely ages once, I don't remember how long, but that vile tea was definitely helpful.

I'm booked in for a laparoscopy and my surgeon said recovery time is 1 week. Is it likely to be much longer?

I was told to walk short amounts frequently during the day to help get everything moving again, but it does sound like the pain is going on a bit long and if its not decreasing, but increasing, it sounds like you should get back in touch with the surgical team, or at the very least your GP

Prunes and peppermint tea worked for me after I had my gallbladder out!

I had one last ear and seen to remember standing like the letter C for about a week, the pain eased after two weeks and I was able to start doing things again, I definitely felt a lot better in week two so I presume if your job is sitting down at a desk it would be easier to start to plan going back to work sooner.

@FabulouslyFab that's odd! Why have I been told it's only one week? I'm going to have to let work know too and get a sick/fit note.

@HandOff if I remember correctly I had three weeks off work, I got a week sick note from the hospital then gp signed me off for two extra weeks, I felt fully fit to go back to work after the three weeks.
Top tip, my mum loaned me her wheat bag that you pop in the microwave, I wrapped it in a tea towel and walked round with it shoved down my pj bottoms for a week, I felt it was the only thing that helped with the pain.

I have had two laparoscopies and the gas pain went within a week both times, so I'd go back to the GP.

I had two weeks off and a week working from home the first time, which was about right. With the second one I had a week off, and a week working from home, then back to normal but I felt dizzy and tired the third week and with hindsight I should have worked from home for another week. I think everyone and every operation is a bit different though.

Definitely have 2 weeks off at least to recover - I was no way in a state to sit at my desk for 8hrs a day a week after the lap
