Smear tests and HPV - help me understand

Had a smear test last week and was told if they don't find HPV they will not check the cells. That bit is fine and I understand why.

From what I understand though HPV is spread through sex? I am married and we are faithful to each other so if I don't have HPV now do I need to go for smear tests going forward if I only ever have sex with him and they are only ever going to test for HPV?

Could I pay for the vaccine as an extra precaution? Would it be worth it?

I'm sure someone with more knowledge will be along soon but this is just my understanding (apologies if it is wrong).

I think whilst most cancerous cells are caused by HPV a small minority can develop without having HPV. If this is correct, it would still be worth going for your smear.

Re the vaccine - I think it only protects against some types of HPV. Also I don't know how old you are but some doctors don't think the vaccine is effective past age 26.

Ah ok. I'm 29 so might not be eligible for the vaccine.

After having two children I think I'm just feeling a bit fed up of having medical professionals with their hand either up or in the area of my vagina and would prefer not to have to go for more smear tests.
