42 years old, late period

GonzoTheGreat · 12/07/2018 15:48

As the title says I am 42 and my period is a few days late. I was on Monday and as a rule I have a regular 28 day cycle.

My DH had a vasectomy 12 years ago so I'm ruling out pregnancy.

Could this be the beginnings of peri-menopause? No other symptoms to report other than a later period which is extremely unusual for me.

I realise this is a bit of a non-thread but am curious as to what could be going on.

Sod's law means as soon as I press 'post' my missing period will show up Grin.

Maybe the heatwave has affected your body - maybe you are dehydrated? (I have no idea if that can affect periods! )

Idbemonica1 · 12/07/2018 19:28

I am a few years older than you and this sounds so familiar, my periods have gone from every 26 -28 days to appearing anytime from 17 - 42 days. Confused

spugzbunny · 12/07/2018 19:34

You really can't tell anything from one late period. Most GPS wouldn't even run tests until you miss 3. Try not to worry and wait and see what happens

Kingsclerelass · 12/07/2018 19:39

Mmmm, having conceived at 44 after being told we couldn’t have kids, I’d be trotting down to Superdrug.

It means you can cross one thing off the list.

ReachOutAndTouchDave · 12/07/2018 19:44

I'm 43 and have been having irregular periods for a year or so. I've downloaded an app to track it all which has helped a bit but yes I'd say it could be peri menopause. Which can last ten years apparently.

VictorianPrint · 12/07/2018 19:48

Hmm. A "few days late" could be the very early beginnings of peri. My cycle was 28 days to the minute for well-nigh 30 years (pregnancies excluded). I'm now 46, and it's 55 days since the start of my last period. There were nine days (ugh) between the last one and the one before it. I can't remember how this started, but have been keeping a note for at least three years - once I really started to notice that strange things were happening. Worth starting to make a note?

Noboozeforme · 12/07/2018 20:43

Mine started like that when I was 42. I'm 45 now and haven't had a period for 18 months.

GonzoTheGreat · 12/07/2018 22:02

Thanks for all the replies. I will just wait and see what happens now and over the coming months. The joys of being female!

Periods can just be out of whack for no discernible reason. I have always had regular periods, but there was one point a few years ago (in my 20s) where I didn't have a period for 10 weeks. No rhyme or reason to it. It went back to normal again after that.

Mrsbclinton · 12/07/2018 22:06

Im slightly younger than you & my periods have gone from every 28 days to 23 -35 day cycle & extremely heavy.
My gp says its normal from 40 oneards. The joys of being a woman!

vivasunshine · 19/07/2018 13:50

I'm 44 and mine have gone from 55 days to 28 days then 15 days Confused my boobs constantly hurt as though I'm coming on all the time, kills me to take my bra off. This has all been happening since 41(ish). I've been hoping that it will not fall on my long awaited holiday abroad but I just don't know what will happen.

NorbertTheDragon · 19/07/2018 14:07

Mine's late too and I'm also 42. Not impressed as I'm off on holiday on Saturday and was happy thinking it would be over with by now. Instead I'm off to the doctors to get drugs to delay it, because no doubt it would choose to show up mid holiday. Hmm

I would love it if the blasted thing stopped altogether. I do get horrendous heavy days though.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 19/07/2018 14:21

Op I could have written your post. I’m annoyed, it means the next one will fall on our holiday.

Norbert not to alarm you but I once took drugs to stave off my period for a holiday and they brought about the longest and heaviest period I have ever had. I came on on the first day of the holiday and it lasted for the entire duration. Fuck was I annoyed. I’ve had a note put on my file to say never to let me have those again. Hope it doesn’t happen to you!

vivasunshine · 19/07/2018 14:30

Adorabelle I've also heard this, I think the tablets are called norethisterone but was warned against them as they could bring worse period throughout the holiday. Gladly I'm only on 3 days even though heavy but I can put up with this instead of the full 2 weeks.

NorbertTheDragon · 19/07/2018 14:40

Thanks @MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig I've taken them before, so know the risks, luckily it stopped my period for the holiday but I got a horrendous headache after I stopped both times, and my period was pretty awful. But I'd rather that than half the holiday be a write off. Sad Our bloody bodies!

Heratnumber7 · 19/07/2018 14:43

Vasectomies can fail Blush

WendyCope · 19/07/2018 14:47

My periods just stopped at 43 and that was it!
Get yourself on HRT quick to replace your hormones and protect bones and heart. It is quite early.

Of course, it just could be one blip.

storynanny · 19/07/2018 14:54

Its probably start of the peri menopause. I stopped completely at 55 but had about 7 years of late periods.
Once had a sixth month gap, thought, hurrah they are over. Went on holiday in europe, wore white trousers, shops shut for a bank holiday. Motto, always carry a sanitary towel with you!

QueenoftheNights · 19/07/2018 17:48

In your 40s, periods start to go all over the place in the run up to menopause. 42 is quite young though- average age of meno (final period) is 51. I really wouldn't worry yet- periods can do funny things. You might have no more problems for a few years then they go odd again. Many women find their cycles get shorter or longer as they get towards 50- it's not a big deal unless they stop altogether before 50-ish when the treatment is HRT to prevent osteoporosis.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 20/07/2018 20:49

vivasunshine yes that might have been it.

I’ve come on today which means I will come on again around the time we get on a plane for six hours. Hmm

BloomsButtons · 24/07/2018 07:48

Hello again! I am now two weeks late and I am definitely not pregnant (POAS x2).

There's a history of early menopause in my family so wouldn't be overly surprised if this is the start of things, my DM was still in her 30's when she started HRT.

The joys!

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 24/07/2018 15:36

Can’t wait. Will be so glad to see the back of my periods.
