Weeds Have Rights Too !

We , the weed collective have decided that its time to stand up for our weedy rights !
In particular at this time of the year all of our brethren are mercilessly up rooted and poisoned for no reason other than someone has decided that we are inferior to the flowers that humans like.

We bring nature back to derelict area's like neglected road side verges , abandoned gardens, cracks in paving stones , gaps in gutters and the brave ones even go up on to rooftops and live in the chimney stacks and gutters.

Nature isn't meant to be regimented with flowers in neat rows and groups so we come along and add a bit of normal back to your garden and what do you do ? You poison or up-root us . Which also can cause problems to your beloved plants.

We understand that you want things to look pretty, but please leave us a bit of space too.

We create just as much oxygen as your expensive roses and lilies , we feed bees , wasps and butterflies along with lots of other bugs.

We are just flowers that humans have decided they don't want , and that makes us sad.
Please help the weed collective by leaving us a little bit of your land and we promise that we will help to look after your environment.

( just incase nobody notices this is a bit tounge in cheek , but I do think that all plants help our environment and bees don't care if its a dandelion or prize rose that they get there pollen from)

The council have just poisoned my weeds outside my house while I was out, despite their own policy saying they will leave wildflowers. RIP poppies and borage. www.rhs.org.uk/plants/borage

That's so sad @SowWhatNow. As a species, we have such a messed up relationship with nature. It's not a problem that needs to be sorted with chemicals. It just needs to be allowed to do its own thing 🙁

WaryCrow · 01/07/2026 17:46

@SowWhatNow I’m loving the photo, not the poisoning! It is sad about the council. There seems to be a lot of areas left to flower where I am.

DeadBug · 01/07/2026 17:47

I like borage. It's very pretty.

WaryCrow · 01/07/2026 18:09

Nice contrast with the pink willowherb too!

It's so annoying when they do this , it happened near me , that's why I started this thread last year ( to the day as near as dam it )

This wild flower has now gone to seed , its little seeds look like mini black pea pods .
The flowers are tightly clustered bright yellow flowers.

Is that broom?

ScottBakula · 05/07/2026 22:21

I have no idea @OhMyGoodieAunts , I can recognise dandelions, tulips and carnations and that's about it !

Broom is a big shrub, like gorse but with no thorns or scent. A small yellow pea-flowering plant could be melilot or meadow vetchling?

RainOnTins · 07/07/2026 17:35

A close up pic of my very weedy lawn. I think the yellow flowers may be pineapple weed, but I’m not 100% sure.

I did a wildflower walk (a.k.a. a weed walk) at an RSPB reserve recently and learnt so much! I’m appreciating all those weeds even more now.

In other news DH tells me we have miner bees burrowing under our lawn. I love the idea that they’ll be able to find some flowers the second they put their heads out of their burrows 🥰

@WaryCrow I think it could be or at least a close relative, the seed pods are a different shape but the other than that they do look similar.

Is my imagination or does the thing that's holding the seed pods look a bit slug like 🐌

@RainOnTins , you can do weed walks ? ! That's amazing.

Your lawn looks great , your bees won't have a long way to go to get to the pineapple ( flavored?) flowers

@ScottBakula Pineapple weed both smells and tastes like pineapple. That really blew my mind on my guided weed walk!

I'm still not sure that's what I'm looking at here. The walk was at a coastal location and while my garden isn't that far from the sea, I wouldn't call it coastal.

The walk was a lot of fun. No one else had shown up for it, so DH and I had the guides to ourselves. It was only supposed to last an hour, but the guides kept pointing out more and more things and before we knew it 2.5 hours had passed. They apologised afterwards and told us that normally people zone out after 20-30 minutes, but as we weren't showing any signs like that they lost track of time😂

Ryanstartedthefire2 · 08/07/2026 23:49

In a posh bar in italy yesterday they had rosebay willowherb in vases. Looked lovely too

ScottBakula · 09/07/2026 08:14

@RainOnTins ,It's amazing that it actually tastes and smells of pineapple, I think you need to bruise the petals and leaves a bit and give it a sniff.

That walk sounds lovely, I don't think I could manage 2.5 hrs tho and with my hopless memory I'd forget half of what I was told before the end of the walk but I am still envious of you and your dh .
