Books for five year old boys

My (nearly) five year old ds is loving the faraway tree, Millie mollie Mandy, naughty little sister, Teddy Robinson stories. As you can see these reading choices have been slightly influenced by my own early favourites! Can you give me some ideas to broaden his reading - anything more contemporary would be great. He likes Fantastic Mr Fox and Giraffe and Pelly etc too.

Is it more stuff to read to him or for him to read? Some of the authors I liked to use with infant classes are Mick Inkpen, Eric Carle, Pat Hutchins, John Burningham, Shirley Hughes, the Alhbergs, Anthony Browne, Michael Rosen.

Mine loved The Gruffalo and anything else by the authors, the Katie Morag series (about a girl living on a Hebridean Island, but not at all girly, IYKWIM), anything by Dr Seuss and Babette Cole. We pretty much read anything and everything. Now 7 his favourite books are the Horrid Henry series...oh well...

Dick King-Smith's Sophie stories are ace. Wish he would write the equivalent about a little boy!

Jane 313 It's stuff to read to him - he's only just started reading so the ones he does on his own are v v dull. I want to keep him excited in reading. He does like all the ones you mention but I'm looking for longer books to read together.

i am on book 9 ( yawn) of famous five! i ove it really and we sniggel up fro 11 pages each night

Steer him away from Horrid Henry for as long as you can! I can't remember how he got into them - I think some his friends with older brothers were into them - but I would never stop him reading anything at this stage, so I go with the flow.

Thanks cod - we've read most of these! Not tried Narnia, Hobbit or Potter - feeling they are a bit too old atm. Did you try with your ds?

you can look on amazon under different age ranges, so you could look at the agfe above him so they would be more suitable for you to read to him

cod - fantastic - Paddington, Gobbolino and (one of my all-time favourites) Charlotte's Web! How could I have forgotten that one? Will def try these and Jamie and Angus too.

Didnt ever get into Olga (although should have adored it given my devotion to Hammy Hamster). Loved Mrs Pepperpot though.
