Anyone else still reading Miss Read, Fairacre and Thrush Green?

I came across this lovely little video about Miss Read, Fairacre and Thrush Green, an interview with her daughter. I loved these books when I was young, but haven't read them for years. I wonder if the libraries still stock them.

I re-read Village School a while ago, for the first time in years. I'd forgotten what a lovely book it is.

I read them all when I was younger. Decided a couple of years ago I'd like to read them again. I had a good haul from a charity shop so am still working through those, I find them a bit much if you read them back to back. They haven't aged particularly well but still a nice cosy, easy read.

I read them a while ago - the meeting in the village all where everyone sits in silence (except the committee) -then burst into complaint and criticism as soon as they walk out.

Our local library still has a few and I have one omnibus edition myself which contains about three of the Fairacre Village School books. I always preferred Fairacre to Thrush Green. Yes they are dated but still a lovely read from time to time.

@Smokeywater I am a little younger, born 1962, but I also went to a small country school and so much in the books sounds familiar, albeit my school was in the North of England rather than South Downs.

The stove in the classroom burning coke. Yup we had that. Just two teachers with the headmistress teaching the juniors and the other teacher for the infants, again the same. Even the way the school dinner arrived, cooked in a central kitchen and then delivered, packed in insulated containers, by a lady in a van.

Simpler times

I read them all years ago. I've got all the Thrush Green books on my Kindle and have read them a couple of times and still enjoy them.

I won't read the village school ones as I'm a retired teacher and don't want to read anything about schools any more.

I also have the Christmas ones which get an annual outing.

I'm just re-reading Miss Clare Remembers. I have loved them for years, and still find them consistent comfort reads.

I saw that you tube video too. There was a thread about Miss Read awhile back. They are very comfortable reading . I like to reread mine in the wintertime. Very cosy.

I love these books. They are my go-to cure when the reality of this world seems overwhelming.

My darling aunt died recently, and I've been passed her copies of these series. Despite being an avid reader, I've never read them. Should I?

(Normally it wouldn't be a question, but I'm also a new mum, so my reading capacity has shrunk by about 95%)

I am fairly sure that they are still in print.

Yes! I love Miss Read. They are my ultimate comfort read. I have some in paperback and some on my Kindle.

At least read Village School and Miss Clare Remembers - in that order. They are very cosy, undemanding reads.

Put them in a safe place, and save them as a special treat for when you have more reading time 👍🙂
