How do you get through books you hate?

Sarah J Maas has announced the 6th and 7th books in her ACOTAR series, which means that I need to read the Crescent City series. The issue is I absolutely hate it, but it’s key to understanding the next books! Any tips please?!

I can kind of see what you mean - it's like being in an unsatisfactory relationship - or spending time with someone you dislike because you can't find a polite way out of it.

It's not valuing your time and attention enough, is that what you mean, @JinksySaur ?

Personally if I felt I HAD to, I'd skim read. Before that I'd ask Reddit, and before that I'd read a plot summary.

But luckily I don't have to read things I don't enjoy because I'm not in school, and I have no one to impress. (Although one of the Stormfire Archives was a bit of a slog)

Exactly.

I mean if you force yourself to read books you're not enjoying, you're not valuing your own time enough. Life is pitifully short, why the the hell would you waste a second of it reading books you're not enjoying? Baffling.

Ah that’s a shame. CC was my favourite of the 3 series.
If you don’t want to read it, read a summary.
There are so many books out there I really want to read that I’ll be dead before I get
to them all so I don’t have a problem DNF anything I’m not enjoying.

muddyford · 24/08/2026 10:40

I don't. Life too short for the books I love and want to read.

thisoldcity · 24/08/2026 11:04

Skimming and skipping!

katseyes7 · 24/08/2026 11:07

I don't. I used to struggle on to the bitter end, but honestly, life's too short.
I've had two recently which l've given up on after a couple of chapters.
And another after reading the first three pages.
If l'm enjoying a book, l'll stay up later than planned, thinking "Just a bit more...."

I’m glad I didn’t listen to everyone on here being rather rude because this time I love it! I’ve torn through book one this weekend and halfway through book two!

That's good news! I think that sometimes when we remember hating something, that feeling is so strong that when we revisit it, the book (or tv or place etc) can't live up to the image in our mind and we can be pleasantly surprised.

Btw, I don't think that all those people who posted the "life's too short" comments were being rude - they just had very poor comprehension skills. You made it very clear in your op that you're generally happy to give up on books but had a specific reason for trying to get through this series (which has, luckily, turned out to be enjoyable 2nd time round).
There's a great thread on this board about which books readers have given up on . I think those posters should have been posting on that thread instead of this one!

Sadly in this case I don’t think it’s really possible, as apparently they’re tied quite closely together.

It’s a shame because I genuinely love her other series, but this one just doesn’t do it for me at all

Just go online and find the synopsis. I dint know this author but often when stories are linked they'll either explain it as they go or provide some some of Intel.

But if you hate the booksinked to it, will yo u even like these new one?

MissMappsGardenProduce · 26/08/2026 19:10

Lile most other PP, I wouldn't-you will be able to get a plot summary somewhere.

But, given that you seem set on getting through it...

Set a timer for 15 minutes to read however much you can in that time. If you feel, when the timer goes off, that you can do a bit more or carry on to a natural break, then do so.

Have a cup of tea, a glass of wine or whatever you fancy at the beginning of each session. Sit down take a sip, set the timer and crack on!

Good luck!

Just seen your update! Well done.

Okay, I’m not asking whether I should or not. I need to - I’m asking how I do it?

You don't.
It's simple.
Just discard your tedious book.

BCBird · 26/08/2026 20:16

I don't. I give up. My time is too.precious to spend it reading things I don't want to read

autumnvelvetwhisper · 26/08/2026 20:23

I don't. If I don't like a book by chapter 2 I shut the book and donate it.

RaraRachael · 26/08/2026 20:33

I don't. If I'm not enjoying a book after 3 chapters, I ditch it.

Any1ForTennis · 26/08/2026 20:36

If you absolutely insist, read 30 minutes per day, preferably with your morning coffee to get it over and done with.

Holymolymoon · 28/08/2026 14:36

I've only ever really hated one book. Tomorrow after tomorrow after tomorrow. I went to the bookshop and asked for a book with a strong female character and was sold one where the fmc suffers from gratuitous sexual abuse from her professor who destroys her life and gets away with it. If I could, I would have burned that book.
