Could we have a thread with recommendations for 13/14+ readers. We are not going anywhere this summer and dd does love to chill with a book.

I'll start with both my teens have liked

The Book Thief

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Love & Gelato

Everything, Everything

The Summer I Turned Pretty

The Cousins

The Inheritance Games

The Naturals

One of Us Is Lying

We Were Liars

Hunger games

Very grateful for book recommendations to keep YP from being too bored.

How would she be with books that aren’t YA but can still be read at that age?

Dracula
Wavewalker
Practical Magic

Reader19 · 14/07/2026 21:24

I was also going to suggest Fire and Hemlock. Other YA suggestions:

  • Sally Lockhart series (Philip Pullman)
  • Stravaganza series (Mary Hoffman)
  • Books by Katherine Rundell

Babel (R. F. Kuang) and Robert Harris thrillers could be good options that aren't YA. I remember really enjoying Robert Harris's Pompeii at 12/13. I also remember enjoying The Time Traveller's Wife at 14ish.

My daughter text me at 3am this morning, having stayed up basically all night reading The Escape Game. She loved it, and is devastated the next one isn't out until April next year.

ExplodingSmittens · 17/07/2026 07:21

@YouBelongWithMeI hate it when that happens. April next year feels like such a long wait for the next instalment.

@Sheeppigif she liked The Crysalids The Day of the Triffids and The Midwich Cuckoos are also both good.
