What book did I read 35 years ago?!

That I can't remember anything about but it popped into my head for some reason and it's driving me mad.
I had to read it for English literature. A level I think. I thought it was called something like The Red House by Michelle somebody but Google is drawing a blank.
I'm sure it had a colour and a house or room in the title. I think it was about a woman revisiting her past and finding hidden secrets/trauma.

A bit of a leap but...The Yellow Wallpaper?

The color purple?

Google suggests Daughters of the House by Michele Roberts.

in the red kitchen by Michelle Roberts?

Its going to be a Michele Roberts book. There was one where a woman ate glass and I still have nightmares 20 years later!

I think it must be this, thank you! I obviously need to improve my googling skills.
I was so sure it had the word red in the title but it was a long time ago.

it's Daughters of the House. I just read the first couple of pages on Amazon and remembered the glass straight away. 16 year old me didn't get the book at all but something must have stuck if I'm thinking about it nearly 4 decades later so I'm really chuffed to get the chance to read it again.

Thanks to everyone else for the suggestions.

Another of her books is called 'in the red kitchen' so maybe that's where you are getting the colour red and the room from.
