I've just read A Special Relationship after someone suggested him on here! No expectations whatsoever, never heard of him as an author until a few days ago......but wow. What a great book. I really, really enjoyed it.

What's the next one of his to read?

It was me!!!!!

Go for “The Pursuit of Happiness” and “State of the Union” next.

My favourite book is The Pursuit of Happiness

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 10/07/2026 20:52

I loved The Pursuit Of Happiness! I haven’t read another I don’t think

DoctorMartin · 10/07/2026 20:53

All his early ones are good - later ones get a bit ridiculous, but I loved the ones mentioned. I have a feeling he started using a ghost writer in later years.

Oh, I went through a Douglas Kennedy phase about 10 years ago. The Moment was good.

What I started to notice was that every male character would move to his own place and spend not much money doing it up. Always a trip to a DIY shop to fix his sanded wooden floors and paint all the walls white 😄

Iamateadrinker · 10/07/2026 20:56

I have loved all of his books
Try the job, the big picture and The woman in the fifth
Never disappoints in my opinion

SwedishEdith · 10/07/2026 20:57

The Big Picture was good. Was made into a French film. I always think of that film when I see Cloudy Bay wine in the supermarket.

DoctorMartin · 10/07/2026 20:59

Btw if you like Douglas K try Dominick Dunne. A Season in Purgatory is based on a real life murder and is supposed to be about the Kennedy clan in America. It’s fantastic!

The pursuit of happiness is my all time favourite book. Five days is good, as is leaving the world and the moment.

Iamateadrinker · 10/07/2026 21:03

@Daisy03 I'd completely forgotten about this
I loved that book
Must seek it out again
