I started reading this book this week and I'm not sure that I can continue.

I'm debating not finishing it but I never do that - feels like giving up.

I'm unsure if I'm being dramatic but some of the treatment is child abuse to me and it's not sitting comfortably. Plus, the sex - not prudish but not loving that either.

If it doesn't continue much more beyond early life then I might continue but if it's constantly interspersed with it then I'd rather call it my first 'did not finish'.

Can anyone that's read it give me a guide please?

Also interested in this as it's my next book club read and I've heard mixed things about it.

I have read it and loved it. Not at all what I was expecting. I can’t say too much as I don’t want to give anything away. Try to get past the sex bit. I read that it’s out as a film in October.

@Ladybird69 thanks. It's more about the early treatment of the kids (again, don't want to inadvertently 'spoil') - does that calm down?

.....also, maybe because it's my first audiobook choice. Hearing it rather than reading it iyswim is making it more upsetting to me.

I’ve not read it, but I did read another by Colleen Hoover ‘it ends with us’ and that was the biggest load of shite I have ever read. So I’d not attempt another.

I read it a couple of years ago. I couldn’t decide if it was brilliant or awful. It was really a bit of both.

Ladybird69 · 31/05/2026 21:37

@CaffeineDeficient it probably isn’t the best book to listen to. The abuse is uncomfortable but relevant to the storyline. The story is a bit uncomfortable reading but I can’t explain how relevant it is without spoilers. I was in a bit of a reading funk and my friend gave it to me as she’d raved about it when she read it. I read it in a weekend and I’ll watch the film. It’s kind of along the same vein as The Housemaid imo

I read it years ago, my Goodreads review was ' Utter trash, I loved it!'. It's the only Coleen Hoover I've managed to get through.

Well, I'm finished. I didn't love it. I'm glad I finished it tho!
