Hello! Another challenge to hep me find a book I loved as a child.

Basic plot was that your eye colour determines your worth as a human. Brown eyes were the ruling class, grey eyes servants, blue and green eyed people were exiled/outlawed.

The book starts with a grey eyed boy who works on a farm for a Manor House. I specifically remember a passage about it being a frosty morning and he stands in a cow pat with his bare feet for the warmth. It squirmed me out as a child so I remember it!

It’s a bit of a Romeo and Juliet story with him falling in love with a girl with brown eyes and them running away (I think?)

I was but a youngster when I read this so early to mid nineties.

Any help anyone can give me would be great! I’d love to read it again, but I can’t remember its name for the life of me.

@LadyFlumpalot I would guess there are almost no copies for sale outside New Zealand (though in the UK you could read it at eg the British Library - some of the major libraries hold a copy). There is however a copy for sale available here from a bookseller in NZ:

I’ll have to see if I can find my copy, it should be around somewhere, I very rarely got rid of books. It’s either in my Dads attic, my Mums attic or my attic! It doesn’t seem to be available on either Apple Books or Kindle/Amazon books either.
