I can read a paper book alongside listening to an audio book. I'm curious as to if people do both or one at a time.
I'm currently listed to The cutthroat trial by The Secret Barrister and A Neighbours Guide to Murder by Louise Candlish.

I am currently listening to Husband and Wife by K L Slater and reading Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides.

Broadly speaking I listen to popular/bordering on trashy books and physically read more literary books. I try not to start a new book on one at the same time as the other.

I also supplement my listening with performed plays, non fiction - generally history and listening to more literary books I I’ve already read. Currently I’m having to drive to see my elderly mum in hospital and have downloaded some dramatisations and short stories to listen to supplement listening to music.

I find I need something trashy/ gripping when I’m doing boring housework. But readings of favourite novels when I need soothing.

Yes I find returning to old books comforting too.

Currently listening to The Odyssey read by Clare Danes

tattoolondon · 23/03/2026 19:48

I can only do something light / easy to follow with housework too. Did a lot of the cosy murder mystery genre but got bored. Currently listening to Satsuma Complex by Bob Mortimer which is brilliant if you like his humour. Also enjoyed Miranda Hart’s latest, not light but inspiring.

bunnyvsmonkey · 23/03/2026 19:53

I have been trying to listen to the colour of magic for about 6 months.

southbailey · 23/03/2026 20:02

Reading Flashlight by Susan Choi
Listening to The Benefactors by Wendy Erskine.
Trying to make my way through several of the longlisted books on the women's prize for fiction list.

I'm currently listening to Starling House by Alix E Harrow. Enjoying it very much indeed. I have only just recently discovered her as an author. I have already listened to The Everlasting and The Ten Thousand Doors of January. Both brilliant too.

What is the stumbling block?

I am finally listening to Mr Norrell and Jonathan Strange. I tried reading it twice when it first came out - 20 years ago - but couldn’t get into it. It’s a long listen, and I’m about 3/4 through it. It’s nicely read but I’m not a fan of the story massively, although I know it has some mega fans.

I really enjoyed Jacinta Adern reading her book recently, and also Precipice by Robert Harris.

What is the stumbling block?

A combination of not finding the characters interesting or funny (I like Terry pratchett witches books though) and the fact that I fall asleep after 10 mins and then have to rewind it and listen to the same bit again and again. I also lost my headphones I can only listen to it when I'm cleaning at the weekend.

tobee · 24/03/2026 00:18

Hmm maybe you falling asleep while listening is your body trying to tell you something about the book @bunnyvsmonkey? 🤔😀 Still it’ll be useful if you ever become insomniac.

DoAWheelie · 24/03/2026 01:43

I usually have a kindle book and an audiobook on the go at the same time.

At the moment my kindle book is Dianna Wynne Jones's "Fire and Hemlock" and audio is "Dungeon Crawler Carl" - I've just started a re-read of the series in preparation for the 8th book releasing in May.

@bunnyvsmonkey in audible while you are listening to a book there is a "timer" option in the bottom right and clicking it lets you set the book to play for a set amount of time before turning off, or to play a set number of chapters. It's great for bedtime so you are not having to constantly find your place again.

Socialworkmama · 24/03/2026 02:13

Can’t do both together. I’ve been listening to all the Louise Penny Inspector Gamache books. On 7 and they have become my comfort listen. Reading The Familiar right now

BooneyBeautiful · 24/03/2026 02:19

Currently reading The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley

BigFatLiar · 24/03/2026 02:52

Currently listening to 'Wolves among the stars'
part of the Backyard Starship series. Light, easy listening scifi.

bunnyvsmonkey · 24/03/2026 21:52

Yes I set the timer for 45 mins and then fall asleep 😂 Its really needing headphones and a less busy head so I don't end up worrying about other things while I listen.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 24/03/2026 21:54

Listening to Project Hail Mary
reading The Book Club for book club

I listen to Audible when I get into bed. I set the timer but you still have to find your place again if you fall asleep before the timer cuts in.

RockyBirdy · 24/03/2026 22:03

Currently re-listening to Dungeon Crawler Carl same as @DoAWheelie in prep for the new release. Hi Zev!

I have Poisonwood Bible on the go for my Kindle.

Two completely different vibes!

therewasafishinthepercolator · 24/03/2026 22:09

Always have an Audible and a Read With Eyes book on the go.

Like pp I listen to Audible using the timer to fall asleep. Also when I'm walking, doing chores, long drives, etc. I can't seem to do anything without an audiobook.

Atm Audible: The Seventh Son - Sebastian Faulks
Book - Catcher in the Rye.

Santasbigredbobblehat · 24/03/2026 22:09

Listening to Julien Barnes’ final book, Departures read by him.
Reading Heated Rivalry!

I have Departures on my list to read. What do you think of it so far?

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 24/03/2026 22:14

My current audiobook is The Woman In The Cabin by Becca Day - very good.

I usually have a physical book going for bedtime (too many times falling asleep to audiobooks and then having to work out where I got to😆) - just finished Camino Ghosts by John Grisham, which I thought was tosh.
