I always ask for books, whenever anyone asks me what I would like for Christmas! This year I am hoping for:

Elements - John Boyne
I, Who Have Never Known Men - Harpman
God of the Woods - Liz Moore
Wild Dark Shore
Raising Hare - Dalton
The Safekeep
Frozen River

I am gifting The Names and Broken Country to a few people, as I loved them.

I gave DH a choice and asked him to pick just one:

Searching for Caleb - Anne Tyler
Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant- Anne Tyler
Island of Missing Trees - Elif Shafak
The Sundown Motel - Simone St James

This was part of my Christmas from the kids. However, it looks like he has bought them all!

Meadowfinch · 14/12/2025 14:03

The latest Strike book. 🙂

FurForksSake · 14/12/2025 14:08

I think the only book I’ll receive is a book on glazing and surface design for my pottery from dh. I’ve bought him a one plank woodworking book 😆

However… I’m creeping on your options!

Purplebunnie · 16/12/2025 21:50

Written on the Dark - Guy Gavriel Kay

It's all I want but I may have some surprises

marmitegirl01 · 16/12/2025 22:22

Kathy Burke -A Mind of my Own 🤞🏻

lurkingfromhome · 17/12/2025 17:48

Elements - John Boyne
Heart the Lover - Lily King
The Correspondent - Virginia Evans
Wreck - Catherine Newman

All of them perfect for lying on the sofa under a blanket on Boxing day with a box of chocolates beside me

My DD will be receiving S by JJ Abrams and I'm excited to see what she thinks of the concept. I've not read it but I'm intrigued and think she will be

MsOtisReflects · 17/12/2025 19:33

I’m giving myself:

Your Name Here - Helen De Witt

TheChosenTwo · 17/12/2025 19:36

Kathy Burke -A Mind of my Own 🤞🏻

Oh good shout! I’ve bought myself the Jacinda arden book to put under the tree and might also pick this one up 😂

dh and the dc do buy me surprises but no one will buy me these so I do always put things I know I want under there!

I love Anne Tyler but didn’t enjoy the one Elif Shafak book I’ve read that much.

I might have a look at the Simone St James one.

My family have refused to buy me books for Christmas since I was about 10 because, "You have too many!" 🙄

One can never have too many books... and I have 22 new-to-me ones that have just arrived, ranging from various books about Scottish islands, different religions, and how to be self-sufficient, so I have plenty to read in the meantime... and then my mother will go, "Oh, that looks interesting! Could I borrow it?"

Almondflour · 17/12/2025 21:56

50th anniversary edition of Salem’s Lot by Stephen King.
I already own the 50th edition of Carrie so it would be lovely to start a collection.

I was thinking I should be aiming for a book free Christmas as I have so many on my tbr pile. But now you've made me feel you've given me permission to ignore that and hope for some anyway! 😬 Book tokens are also always welcome. 👍

I have asked my partner to buy me Richard Holmes’ new book on Tennyson. It’s a sort of biography, but argues that Tennyson wasn’t the dry, gloomy Victorian we all imagine. I like Holmes’ stuff. He’s kind of like Bill Bryson - fun and lively and full of wonderful anecdotes and interesting nuggets of information.

I met Richard Holmes once at a party and he was delightful.

This is my biggest gift to myself this Christmas actually: my PILs are giving me a book voucher so I can buy actual, physical books. When I was with my exDH, he would get frustrated at me for buying anything tangible, since we moved every few years - he thought physical books were unnecessary and I should just get everything as an e-book. I left the country, he and the OW threw out everything I owned, including the few books, and I moved in with my best friend, who is now my DH, who just said I can have all the books I want 😭 My first purchase will probably be Pratchett or Wodehouse - two beloved favorites.

FFSToEverythingSince2020 · 18/12/2025 23:04

Also love seeing all these books I’ve not heard of! I’m looking them all up, starting with the ones you mentioned @ThumbTowers

weegiemum · 19/12/2025 12:56

I can’t remember what I asked for but dh keeps a list!

It was my birthday this week and I got Margaret Atwood’s autobiography which I’m really looking forward to reading!

thisoldcity · 19/12/2025 15:03

I came here to say the Margaret Atwood autobiography @weegiemum! I really want to read it but I don't think any of the family have read my mind accurately enough to buy it for me.

OP, I'm reading The Safekeep at the moment and I think it's extraordinary.

GloriousGiftBag · 26/12/2025 09:34

I received The God of the Woods (I asked for it)!

I loved The Island of Missing Trees but haven't read others of hers.

I also received James by Percival Everett and The Wedding People. I plan to sit around reading for the rest of the holidays!

BauhausOfEliott · 26/12/2025 10:41

I never ask other people to buy me fiction because throughout the year I buy whatever I want to read for myself either in bookshops or electronically. But I usually get some nice non-fiction / illustrated / coffee table type books as gifts. This year my DP gave me an amazing edition of Paradise Lost with sprayed edges and Gustave Dore illustrations which is absolutely beautiful. He also got me a lovely hardback copy of a book about the history of children’s fiction which I’d asked him for.

ThumbTowers · 26/12/2025 10:55

I got all the books I wished for, plus some extra! E.g The Offing by B Myers. Just need the time to read them all now!
