Christmas fiction, ideally ghost or thriller

I've exhausted MR James, The Winter Spirits and similar

Ideally I'd like a spooky thriller, locked in a Country house type of thing.

But really I'm open to anything.

Thanks

The Turn of the Screw
A Christmas Carol (amazing book!)
And Then There Were None (not Christmas but creepy!)
Any of the Agatha Christie ghost stories
Hercule Poirot’s Christmas

Thank you. I hadn't thought of Agatha Christie ghost storys

She did lots of short ones -
The Lamp
Wireless
The Witness for the Prosecution
The Strange Case of Sir Arthur Carmichael
The Last Seance
The Gypsy
The Red Signal
Accident
SOS

Then if you like MR James there are loads of other similar short stories:

The Signalman by Charles Dickens
Was it an Illusion? by Amelia B Edwards
The Judge’s House by Bram Stoker
The Open Door by Charlotte Riddell
The Body Snatcher by Robert Louis Stevenson
A Strange Christmas Game by JH Riddell
Between the Lights by EF Benson
To Be Taken with a Grain of Salt by Charles Dickens
Narrative of the Ghost of a Hand by Sheridan Le Fanu
The Upper Berth by F Marion Crawford
Called by PC Wren

There are lots of substandard short ghost stories out there, but these one are all good. I think so anyway! 🙂

Some great suggestions here.

The Nine Tailors by Dorothy L Sayers isn’t a ghost story, but it is a wintry mystery (starts on New Year’s Eve)

The Woman in Black by Susan Hill!

(A very spooky ghost story. The framing device is an old man telling his family the story at Christmas, if I recall correctly. I read it at Christmas every year.)

mellongoose · 09/12/2025 06:47

I was about to say The Woman in Black.

Purplebunnie · 09/12/2025 12:49

Well that's added a pile to my reading list, thanks (I think😂)

Ichangedmynameonce · 09/12/2025 14:55

Thank you! I love the woman in black.

I really enjoyed Fireside Gothic by Andrew Taylor. Especially the first story which is called Broken Voices. Scared the bejesus out of me! Love a spooky tale.

If you want a read in one day type novella, highly recommend The Christmas Guest by Peter Swanson. Short but with an excellent twist.

Pallisers · 11/12/2025 21:26

The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters is very atmospheric.

Foxpooshampoo · 11/12/2025 21:49

The Apparition Phase by Will Maclean
