Can you recommend me a cosy festive read that’s not about star crossed lovers?

I have really enjoyed
JM Hall
Fiona Leitch
Peter Boland
Richard Osman
Jo O’Neill

All in the ‘cosy murder’ genre except Jo O’Neill which was more of a psychological thriller brilliant but not for a Christmas read!

I want something festive but not sickly, no boy meets girl, fall in love but fail to communicate over some misunderstanding which threatens their relationship then last minute all is resolved and a Merry Christmas was had by all. The Milly Johnson and Cathy Bramley authors are not for me.

Also loved MC Beaton but I’m up to date, didn’t enjoy the Hamish series though.

Any nice recommendations for a good festive read please?

Thank you

Edited to add I prefer British authors to American.

Try Katy Watson’s A Lively Midwinter Murder. It’s part of a series as well so there are more to go for if you like this one.

Not your usual genre but my go to xmas read is Norah Robert’s How far to Bethlehem

I recommend Katy Watson too, not read A Lively Midwinter Murder yet but the whole series is good fun.

Roderick Thorp Nothing lasts forever

not exactly cosy but it’s the book of the film Die Hard which is obviously a Christmas movie 🤣

Ilovemyshed · 08/11/2025 06:46

Try some of the Miss Read books: Village Christmas, The Christmas Mouse, No Holly for Miss Quinn, The White Robin, Christmas at Thrush Green.

Also A Christmas Carol, Christmas at Cold Comfort Farm

Ilovemyshed · 08/11/2025 06:47

White Boots by Noel Streatfield also

Aparecium · 08/11/2025 08:30

The Christmas Cookie Club, by Ann Pearlman.

American, sorry, but good. Overall cosy, yet not saccharine because it’s not all happy-happy. I enjoyed it.

Also, biscuit recipes!

The new “Agatha Christie” Poriot ones if you like the cosy crime.

I’ve just finished Murder at Mistletoe Manor by F L Everett- murder mystery based around strangers stranded in a hotel days before Christmas due to incessant snow, very cosy!

Skipping Christmas - John Grisham

One Snowy day - It has some romance in, but it’s a minor part of the plot.

Clawdy · 17/11/2025 13:00

"Hercule Poirot's Christmas" - a good Christie read!

MadameDeveria · 17/11/2025 13:03

Do you like short stories? Jeanette Winterson’s Christmas Days: 12 Stories and 12 Feasts for 12 Days is a gem.

Hoolahoophop · 17/11/2025 14:48

I like Jane and the Twelve days of Christmas. A Jane Austen investigates story. Cosy and fun for austenite's.

Carriemac · 17/11/2025 16:32
