I'm not enjoying this book and I'm giving up half way through. But I never like to leave a story half finished.

So if you've read it please can you tell me-

Is Christina actually dead and how did she die?

Why was her necklace floating about in the seaweed?

Thank you

I got to the same stage as you OP and gave up half way through. Although I would like to know if Christina did die and how.

I think I gave up because the characters started to annoy me lost some of the reality. I've read other books by Matt Haig and found them to be really good.

The same! I can’t be bothered to finish it. Also need the ending please. I guess I could ask AI, but enjoying the kindred spirits.

I read it. I can't remember what happened at the end. I think she passes her house in UK onto someone who is a walk-on character in the book. or she passes on the wisdom of going to Ibiza and discovering whatever undersea woo there was to be discovered (which I've also forgotten the meaning of). It got very magic-realist. I quite enjoyed it at the time. But mainly I read it because I loved Midnight Library and wanted to see what else he had written.

prisonerofallisurvey · 12/09/2025 12:46

Yes, I loved "The midnight library" and "How to Stop Time".

I thought the main character who inherited the house wasn't authentic. She was supposed to be an older person who was nervous and the next thing she was jumping on bikes and boats and snorkelling with strangers. It just didn't gel for me.

OrsolaRosso · 12/09/2025 12:49

It was all about the magic in the water and it being a portal to another world, which is where the friend who left the house went when she 'died'
I did finish it, but it was odd.

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 12/09/2025 12:55

I nearly DNF this but persevered as I loved the midnight library. As a PP said it was a little odd.

I have since decided that life is too short to finish books I’m not enjoying.

The best bit was the goat. Cynical, adorable creature!

As others have said, the seaweed is a portal to another paradise, which is where Christina went. The Dutch chap decides he doesn’t want to go there and dies naturally. His daughter gets shot and is saved by the powers that Grace has obtained from the sea, then they go on to save the rock from being developed by the nasty man who turns out to be the young boy who was swept away into the seaweed as a child.
Grace then leaves the house and her money to Augustus (?) who originally emailed her to say thank you for being a nice teacher. Meaning this is all the longest email ever received and probably indicates a call to social services might be in order.

I think that’s it. I read it earlier this year and only finished it because it was for a book club. Dh also read it and found it hilarious, managing to shoehorn in every online woo conspiracy thing ever. You aren’t missing much if you don’t bother.

@Sleepeatcrochetrepeat - thank you for the update!. I am glad I didn't persevere now. It seems a hotch potch of ideas melded into one story.

mysparkleismissing · 12/09/2025 13:54

I was also the same with this book but couldn't bring myself to give up as also LOVED midnight library - none of his other books are anywhere near that level!
It was an audio book though through the library ap and had Joanne Lumely reading it
I did finish it but didn't enjoy it, wasn't that desire to just do a bit more and find out what happened next.

Thank you @Sleepeatcrochetrepeat that's all I needed to know. You've saved me about 4 hours of my life
