Of course I can catch up with it, but I came to Shardlake with the second book. In the current adaptation of the first book Jack Barak is already in, but I glean that the henchman was Mark in the first book. Was Mark keen on Alice or not particularly? Did Alice go abroad in the book?

I got rid of my copy, but I'm pretty sure that Mark and Alice ended up running away together. I hope someone with a better memory comes along!

Yes, Mark and Alice ran away together, to France, I believe.
Alice kept in touch with Shardlake, letting him know when she had a child, for example.
