Inspired by watching Moana with DD.
I guess I'm looking for something that explains the mythology, or human geography, or just life growing up and living on a Pacific island.
I'm not sure one about modern New Zealand or Hawaii is really what I'm after but maybe?

There's an autobiography book by a chap called Tony Williams who always wanted to live on a desert island so he took his family to the Cook Islands.
It's from the 90s. It's a fairly interesting read.

The sex lives of cannibals is about a couple who move to Kiribati. It's an interesting read about the culture there and the people! Suspect it might be a bit dated now but really enjoyed it many years ago.

Not read it yet - it’s on my TBR! But Sea People might fit the bill -,https://amzn.eu/d/bObZQwC

Hampton Sides’ The Wide Wide Sea - about James Cook’s final voyage has a lot of fascinating detail about Pacific Islanders during that time

It’s fiction but is from a Hawaiian author who grew up there so it’s based on that theme, I’ve seen it recommended on the Hawaiian Reddit

The Invisible Wild by Nikki Van de Car.

I also have a book on my kindle which I can’t switch on but it’s about the Menehune people and a sort of mystery book. It’s good. I think I just searched for Hawaii.
