Fanfiction - yay or nay?

Over the last year or so, I've discovered A03 and managed to find a reasonable number of works that weren't riddled with grammatical errors and a limp along plot too difficult to read.

Quite the opposite with some works, which have been very well written and gripping. It does feel like a bit of a guilty shameful pleasure though, although they're tucked away on my Kindle so no one knows.

I've enjoyed things from the Star Wars universe (Rough Day), Harry Potter (Secrets & Masks, Manacled) and have things on my TBR pile from Fleabag and TLOU.

Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations? Or write their own?

Yes it's one of my guilty pleasures! You have to be picky. I like LOTR ones

GroovyChick87 · 06/05/2025 21:22

Only rude ones about an actor I like.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 06/05/2025 21:24

Nay. I tried reading sone, but find it all cringeworthy in one way or another, especially the toe-curlingly awful attempts at British English by American writers.

fabularasa is a brilliant writer. I’m addicted to her BatLantern works but other fandoms are available.

Does it rhyme with Schmedro Schmascal? Cause if it does. Same.

I used to read a LOT of Jane Austen FF. Some were amazing, some of the people I enjoyed 15 years ago are now published.

If you wouldn’t mind some same-sex fanfic, there is some very good Patsy/Delia fic from Call the Midwife. Well-written and true to the all the characters and period. I’ll try and dig out some names for you if you’d like.

I read and write. However, I am deeply ashamed of my main fandom! There is some excellent stuff on there-but you have to be selective, and the sort of reader who doesn’t mind giving up after a couple of paragraphs.

LOTR is Lord of the Rings!

Yep, guilty pleasure here too. Some of it is very well written! I agree the American version of Britain can be the curlingly bad though.

Can’t say I’m a fan. I find it a bit sad, to be honest. There’s too much decent literature out there to waste my time with the ramblings of some clammy-handed fantasist.

reallyalurker · 18/05/2025 07:30

I've enjoyed some - this one in the world of Elizabeth Goudge, for instance, or some of the Antonia Forest ones. Susan Cooper, too.

I had a big following in LOTR RPF about a million years ago, back in the Livejournal days, when the films were coming out.

Sorry I realise now I quoted the wrong comment!

I adore AO3. Yes, some of it isn't particularly well written, but some of it is stunningly good. If something is bad, or not to your taste, just move on. Generally, when I find an author I like, as well as reading their other stuff I also seek out things they have bookmarked by other authors - particularly their recommendations. I've found it a good way of discovering new things. And some of the stories I've read are every bit as good as published works. I make a lot of use of filters and tags to look for particular things and screen out others. And I am extremely grateful to all the writers who put their work out there for the rest of us to enjoy.

I love a good properly bonkers ship or crossover too!
