I didn't love it. I liked it. I felt like it took a long time to get going and even though her writing is very lyrical, occasionally I just wanted it to be a bit plainer. I feel like I am in a minority though. Wondered if anyone else thought the same?

I’m reading this at the moment. Not far in but I have already been annoyed by a bit in the London 1840 section describing objects being swept into the filthy Thames from the
London gutters which ‘ will keep travelling towards Oxford and beyond’. Not unless the Thames has mysteriously reversed its flow they won’t. Seems such an odd mistake to make and has undermined my confidence in the writing.

Hated it. I very very seldom give upon books but this was one of them. Also agree that a lot of the writing was performative.

I like the book covers, but find books by this author really pretentious and boring. Haven’t read this particular one and won’t.

Just finished it and really struggled. Have now read four of hers and have vowed not to read another because I never liked her characters and don’t like her writing style either.

I also have just finished it and actually I enjoyed it. I liked the different characters. The account of the Yazidi community is heartbreaking. I could have done without the mystic water stuff though.

I personally really enjoyed it. I liked the time jumps and how the different stories linked up. The mystic water stuff was a new and interesting concept to me- I don’t feel she unpacked that as effectively as she could have done though.
