This is a question I often ask myself.

I like to read at night when I’m in bed, so can Mumsnet in the day without feeling guilty 😄

Me too. In my case I think it’s about phones offering lots of dopamine hits and a very passive way of stimulating myself. I’m going to go to bed now though! I love MN sometimes but it also feels like a pure waste of time…

I try to carve out time to read and then I often feel too tired to read and there seems less commitment required to read Mumsnet.

And usually I've tuckered myself out doomscrolling the news. 😬

Good question! I have noticed I go to bed/ sleep much later if I'm on my phone then when I'm reading. And I invariably end up feeling shit about some aspect of myself/ my life when I've been on MN, so it's honestly a mystery to me why I keep coming back... Off to bed now!

I've only recently started bringing my phone up to bed (elderly dm, ds at uni - feel like I need to be contactable 24/7 if necessary) so am much more likely to dick about on my phone now rather than read which I used to do.
I'm putting my phone down NOW and reading a few pages of my book.

I believe there are apps that give you reminders to stop using the internet. Or turns it off for a set period of time.

I used to use the facility on my iPhone; Screem Time that disabled apps after X amount of time. But not hard to override when you're on a juicy thread.

I started this thread wondering if it would engender a philosophical debate as to how we live now (often screen in front of our face). The decline in reading (if it's the case). And whether it mattered. This is the What We're Reading board so the assumption is we like reading books...

But I didn't wasn't to sway the way the thread went necessarily.

Both Mumsnet and reading books can be quite therapeutic and take me "away from myself" iyswim
