Is it a cheek to go to an author signing event and ask them to sign copies of their books that you already own?

Good grief
no op, it is not
you must question yourself so much in life

WartOrNot · 03/04/2025 07:03

Author signings are marketing events. Their purpose is to sell more books, not to add value to books the reader already owns.

Do you mock everybody who asks questions about things that you think are obvious, or only online strangers?

I’ve never had an issue with this, though I do usually buy a copy of the current book, too.

In my experience, this is usually OK as long as you don't take the piss by presenting them with a huge stack of books. And yes, as long as you buy the book they are promoting too.

Does it occur to you that the author loves to engage with anyone who enjoys any of their books?

I’ve wondered that too op, I bought one book at the event and took one I already had, checked with the author and she was happy to sign both.

No doubt more than happy!

100% correct from the perspective of the book shop

Not 100% correct from the author’s perspective
