Very late to the party but I really enjoyed Barbara Kingsolver's The Poisonwood Bible.

If you read it, what did you think?
And what other books do you suggest?

Demon copperhead

Flight Behaviour

It's on my list of favourite books, read it again in a year or so and you'll find bits you missed the first time, just wonderful.

IKnowAPlace · 09/03/2025 23:06

This is on my wishlist - I've read The Lacuna and Demon Copperhead. I've got Unsheltered but haven't read that one yet.

StillLifeWithEggs · 09/03/2025 23:08

My favourite Barbara Kingsolver novels are her first two The Bean Trees and its sequel Pigs in Heaven, and also Prodigal Summer.

Helpagirlout222 · 09/03/2025 23:09

All of hers are amazing! But yes Demon Copperhead and unsheltered are so great

BlueLoris · 09/03/2025 23:12

I’ve just recently read the Poisonwood Bible too and loved it. I preferred it to Demon Copperhead. Other books I’ve enjoyed recently are American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins, the Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne and Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart.

I have Flight Behaviour now and I have ordered Demon Copperhead.

The Lacuna is fab

Mothership4two · 14/03/2025 22:06

I really loved it. Have you tried any of Kristin Hannah's? I lent TPB to MIL and she went on and read the rest of Barbara Kingsolver's books and enjoyed them.

Trumpetoftheswan2 · 16/03/2025 19:53

Have just reread Demon Copperhead - love all of Barbara Kingsolver. Haven't tried Kristin Hannah - is her writing similar?

Their writing styles are different, but they both usually have strong female characters and their books have emotional depth, generally interesting settings and tackle social issues although different themes to each other. Personally I prefer Kingsolver (love her books), but have enjoyed the Kristin Hannah books that I have read.

Books by other authors you might enjoy (though I agree with all the other BK recommendations) are The Goldfinch and Signature of All Things

Costacoffeeplease · 22/03/2025 08:22

I loathed it with a passion, so much so that I have never read any more of her books

Demon copperhead

Absolutely this! It's even better - one of my favourite ever books.

I haven't managed to finished The Lacuna though even though I am really interested in the subject matter. Must give it another go.

Trumpetoftheswan2 · 22/03/2025 19:48

I found The Lacuna hard going, despite the intriguing subject matter. The narrative voice lacked Kingsolver's usual lightness of touch and wit, I think.

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 22/03/2025 19:59

I have read all of her books and Demon Copperhead is my favourite but I’d recommend them all.

Michael Dorris’s A Yellow Raft on Blue Water has a similar vibe to Barbara Kingsolver’s work, I think

edgeware · 22/03/2025 20:04

It’s not similar particularly but I read the red tent at the same time ish and enjoyed both to the same degree

FineSallyFineSally · 22/03/2025 20:34

I would recommend Flight Behaviour too, and then State of Wobder or The Dutch House by Ann Patchett. She is great and very much like Barbara Kingsolver....

Trumpetoftheswan2 · 23/03/2025 17:47

Lovely - thanks.

5foot5 · 25/03/2025 10:18

I read Demon Copperhead about a year ago and loved it. Have also read Unsheltered.

I am currently on holiday and bought The Poisonwood Bible to read while I am away. Less than 100 pages in so far but very much enjoying it.

Lyannaa · 26/03/2025 20:17

I loved The Poisonwood Bible too - it made me cry at some points. It was so believable!

Thank you, I shall do this.
