Need to find a last min present for a 12yr old who loves reading. Her fave book is His Dark Materials. Any similar recommendations?

Chaos Walking trilogy?

BritinUtah · 21/12/2024 18:46

Dark Rising series. Mortal Instruments.

Isitisit · 21/12/2024 18:46

Has she read the Philip Pullman Sally Lockhart series? Or the prequels to HDM The book of Dust? Very different but same great storytelling, I loved all his books at her age but HDM was my favourite too.

Dracarys1 · 21/12/2024 18:47

Artemis Fowl?

Blakehouse · 21/12/2024 18:48

The Night circus. By Erin Morgenstern. It’s wonderful

Oceancreature · 21/12/2024 18:49

Perhaps she has already read the prequels to his dark materials? They were very good.

My 12 year old who has read His Dark Materials more than once loves the Skullduggery Pleasant series. The character Stephanie is 12 at the start of the series.

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness - quite strong stuff, but so is Northern Lights and especially The Book of Dust. Ness is fantastic and I think this is his best one.

Second this. My 11 year old loves His Dark materials and adored Skullduggery pleasant. All 15 of them!

Brandon Sanderson books are pretty young person friendly despite being aimed at adults. No sex or graphic violence. I recommend misborn (the first one), steelheart, triss of the emerald sea (awesome female protagonist).

CurlewKate · 21/12/2024 19:17

Michelle Paver.

Susan Cooper.

Rosenoire · 21/12/2024 19:17

i absolutely loved The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper at that age . The second one in the series can be read first in my opinion and is set at Christmas. I remember the first time i read it- the hairs on the back of my neck rose - and it still has that affect now. beautiful and powerful. i still go back to
it as a middle aged woman. very special in my opinion. and easy to read.

Rosenoire · 21/12/2024 19:18

the second one in the series is called The Dark is Rising

Werecat · 21/12/2024 19:29

Mortal Engines series

skulduggery pleasant series (careful though- there are now many many books)

Orion lost

the hobbit

InMySpareTime · 21/12/2024 20:24

The Neverending story
Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea books

wherethewaterisdarker · 21/12/2024 20:36

Impossible Creatures by Katherine Rundell - the heir to Philip Pullman imo
