Just curious to see what books people have bought as gifts.

For some of the little people in my life I have bought the Narnia boxset, The Hobbit, Philip Pullman's Dark Materials, The BFG and The Wind in the Willows.

For a teen, Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker series.

For partner, the complete Sherlock Holmes short stories.

For mother, a scandi noir (she's bloody obsessed with them) and Thackery's Vanity Fair (which she's going to read with her book group).

For FIL, a P. G. Wodehouse hardback to replace the one he left in a hotel.

Nice.
Eldest DS(6) will be getting Captain Underpants and Dog Man both by Dav Pilkey.

Youngest DS(2) is getting Jonty Gentoo by Julia Donaldson and Elmer by David McKee.

My Mum is getting The Christmas Chronicles and A Thousand Feasts both by Nigel Slater.

I don't think we've bought books for anyone else, but I've asked for Life After Life by Kate Atkinson, The Memory Police by Yogo Ogawa and Passing by Nella Larsen.

AlmostCutMyHairToday · 20/12/2024 20:24

DS 4 - Usborne Beginner's Series Science 10 Books Set Earthquakes and Tsunamis

DM - You Don't Have to Be Mad to Work Here: A Psychiatrist’s Life, by Benji Waterhouse

DF - When We Cease to Understand the World, by Benjamin Labatut

DS - Strong Female Character, by Fern Brady

I've read these and loved them. And bought myself Nicola Lamb's 'Sift' (even though I have way too many cookbooks..!)

@InnerPlop I adored The Memory Police, it is so otherworldly.

We are an Amazon wishlist family so I've bought things that people have asked for that are quite random. So:

Three Kingdoms, A Historical Novel: Complete and Unabridged by Guanzhong Luo

The Sun and the Star by Rick Riordan

The Beano Annual

Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 20/12/2024 20:37

For various :

A Woman Of No Importance by Sonia Purnell
Old Baggage by Lissa Evans
Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry
Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin
None Of This Is True by Lisa Jewell
84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff

I bought my DH a law textbook he's after for his PhD. It's second-hand and out of print, but still eye-wateringly expensive. Still, he hardly ever buys books and relies entirely on the library, so fair enough.

I know I've got the Cambridge Companion to Popular Fiction and Laura Thompson's biography of Agatha Christie (I'm also doing my PhD and Dame Agatha features quite heavily.)

stayathomer · 20/12/2024 22:52

Richard osman, Sarah j Maas, Sophie Kinsella.

EmmyPankhurst · 20/12/2024 22:56

Comfort Eating - Grace Dent
The new ottolenghi cook book (? Comfort???)
Book tokens for the kids. I can't keep up with what they already have and they tell me they like going book shopping.
I should probably chuck in a fiver for the obligatory hot chocolate too!

Moier · 20/12/2024 22:57

I'm getting Vanessa Feltz autobiography.

Dm I bought Any Human Heart, which I've just finished reading myself and Ted a Pawtobiography (Ted the dog from Gone Fishing who my dm loves)

For df a book token.

Both have been voracious readers all their lives but are suffering from eye issues and df has dementia so bit more of a worry giving books this year.

Ds wanted books about Lincoln, Kennedy, by Obama and about the FBI. And about Spielberg and George Lucas.

Dd - still looking for her.

MsAmerica · 24/12/2024 00:08

The two best books I've read in a while:

Travels With Charley, by John Steinbeck
Plunder: Private Equity's Plan to Pillage America, by Brendan Ballou

EwwSprouts · 24/12/2024 20:19

@tobee Thanks I've bought Pawtobiography for DH.

@tobee Thanks I've bought Pawtobiography for DH.

Ha! We can’t be doing with stupid Ted, he’s the annoying bit of a nice show 😂

I mentioned on the phone to my Dad that there was a book focused on Ted and he was “who’d buy a comedy book about that dog? He’s rubbish!”

Me and my family with our fingers on the pulse of popular culture yet again. (My mum said I’m A Celebrity wouldn’t last beyond one series, so we have form)

EwwSprouts · 24/12/2024 20:45

@CaneToad I don't like the programme but DH does. Usually watches it in a different room. We shall find out what he thinks of the dog when he unwraps it!

CaneToad · 24/12/2024 22:15

I’ve bought manga and graphic novels for the ones who like those, David Mitchell’s Unruly for my dad, a Robin Hobb for my brother, Invisible Women for my neighbour, a Sandra Boynton board book for her toddler, an illustrated book of Greek Myths for my other neighbour’s children, and two copies of a puzzle book for MIL and FIL as they like to compete against each other at solving them fastest.
