I remember reading a book as a teenager (I am now 45). From memory it was an Irish saga, about a young woman who was poor and worked herself out of poverty to become successful. I think the heroine had red hair.

I think it may have been a Catherine Cookson type book, but none of hers are ringing a bell.

Can anyone help?

Not Irish and not red hair but might it be Barbara Taylor Bradford's A Woman of Substance?

Hi, no that's not it. It's driving me mad, haha!

I hadn't heard the news today when I pp.

Red Head Heroines (185 books) might help

Not Sara Dane by Catherine Gaskin? She was English, not Irish though, transported to Australia. In some of the book covers she looks like she might have red hair (in others versions she is very blonde!)

Did Tilly Trotter have red hair? My Nan used to love her sagas.

Could it be one of Susan Howatch's novels?

Based in Liverpool though- Twopence to Cross the Mersey by Helen Forrester

Was it 'A Long way from Heaven' by Sheelagh Kelly? There was a series of them, and I'm sure one of the women had red hair.

Star by Danielle Steel?

Sauvignonblanket · 25/11/2024 22:49

I wondered if it was Helen Forrester too - not Irish but a big family in Liverpool

Edna O'Brien's Country Girl?

Was it Colleen McCullough's thingy about the doctor in the Outback. The Thorn Birds? She was a red-head.
