Are Kathy Reichs books any good?

I'm a massive Bones fan and spotted someone on my train earlier reading Kathy Reichs. Are her books any good if you're a Bones fan? I love crime novels such as the James Patterson books and read all of the Dexter books so wondering if it's worth me trying one of hers too. If so would you recommend starting with the first one or a different one?

love them.
they are not at all like bones though, they are a lot more serious.

BirthdayRainbow · 23/10/2024 20:05

I have 15 of them and they are great. Just as enjoyable as the series but more hard hitting. I've put them on vinted as moving house and need to take less stuff 😥

BirthdayRainbow · 23/10/2024 20:05

I'd read them in order.

HateThese4Leggedbeasts · 23/10/2024 20:13

I love them but they can be quite dark. They are gripping.

CranberryHedgehog · 23/10/2024 21:18

Thanks so much! I think I'll give the first one a go soon. I didn't even think of Vinted, I've never used it so didn't know people sold books on there.

I've got two lots on there as found another two books. Have a look. I've seen and sold quite a few books on there.

They are a lot better than the series. The main character is not neurodivergent and her side kick is much more complex. The TV series was very, very loosely based on a great series of books. TV “Bones” is nothing like how I imagined literary “Bones”.

honeyfox · 23/10/2024 21:24

Yes I loved them.

BirthdayRainbow · 23/10/2024 21:25

I watched before I read.

socialdilemmawhattodo · 23/10/2024 21:26

Early ones were great; series went a little wierd. Very like Patricia Cornwall. I think the authors write themselves out or get ghostwriters.

But this type of crime novel is not light and fluffy at all.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 23/10/2024 21:27

I read them before I watched and therefore am a bit annoyed with the way that they choses to go with the main character.

Very readable. Quite dark as pp has said.

I really like them. I’ve read up to book 11 but have just read my review of that one and it was my least favourite and I read it in 2024 so I need to get reading the next one

Going against the grain here but I found the books dire! I bought 3 or 4 from a charity shop before this years holiday thinking that DH, DS1 and I would all read them. Through desperation and lack of reading material I read 3 but found them truly awful, stilted and not flowing

The early ones were OK, but not later. It would depend which ones you bought, and of course Reichs has been writing a long time so now the early ones can seem dated. (But still better than Paretsky by a mile, we are still stuck in c.1986)

StMarieforme · 23/10/2024 22:30

So glad you've said this! I am looking for a new series for Audible!

unsync · 23/10/2024 22:56

I like her. I am also reading them in order. I have also listened to them via Spotify. The narrator was quite good, but not how I'd pictured her from the books I had read. It didn't help that I kept falling asleep and totally lost track.

burnoutbabe · 23/10/2024 23:00

I get them from The library now. I am up to date but don't enjoy them as much as ones before.

I had to check the synopsis of the most recent one -read 2 months ago -about a fire -I have completed forgotten what it was about. Not a classic at all.

2020! 🤦🏻‍♀️

The plots and characters are OK, but her writing style is dreadful.
