Can anyone tell me what this book is?

I remember reading this "chick lit" book in the late 90s / early 2000's.

An out of work British actress went to LA and ended up agreeing to marry a gay man for money. His mum pretended to have breast cancer.

That's literally the only strange things I can remember!

Are you sure you are not thinking of Running Away from Richard, by Chris Manby? Some of the elements of the book are the same as you described (out of work British actress moves to LA and pretends to marry a gay man). I don’t think his mum pretends to have cancer, but I think her flatmate has breast cancer?

I remember those books so clearly! They were free with magazines like Marie Claire. I looked them up and I’m amazed at how many of them she has written!
