If I loved Fried Green Tomatoes

At the Whistle Stop Cafe… what else would I love? I’ve found it struggle to get back into reading. I used to love dystopian fiction but feel I need and want something warm rich and comforting. I have just read and loved Fried Green Tomatoes. What else would I love?

If you liked Fannie Flagg, then Welcome to the World Baby Girl is another goodie.

It's been years, but I don't remember not enjoying any of her books.

Anything at all by Elizabeth Strout. Also probably Anne Tyler. And Carol Sheilds. Some Anita Shreve (some are heavier than others check reviews.) I'll think of some more in a minute! 🙂

Agree. Welcome to the World Baby Girl is a good read.
You might also like "These is My Words" by Nancy Turner. That's a cracking read.

Rose Tremain worth a look - again some heavier than others. Jennifer Johnston. Roddy Doyle (the earlier books.)

Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood by Rebecca Wells.

Sidebeforeself · 24/08/2024 20:12

@AristotlesTrousers I came on to say that! Also Lessons In Chemistry .

Needmorelego · 24/08/2024 20:16

@zippyswife there's a sequel !!!!
Only came out a few years ago.
Called "The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop".
All of Fannie Flagg's books are brilliant. I especially love "Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man".

The Secret Life of Bees

Jesss21 · 24/08/2024 20:38

Agree about 'Welcome to the World...' Also any of John Irvings. Oh and 'Gone with the Wind'.

The Secret Life of Bees

Completely agree with this! Feels almost like a spiritual sequel to FGTatWC (which, as you can probably tell by my username, is one of my favourite books).

zippyswife · 24/08/2024 21:00

Thanks all. Got to say I’m excited about the prospect of all this out there to read! @IdgieThreadgoodeIsMyHeroine she’s mine too! Couldn’t help falling in love with her!

Ann Patchett or Elizabeth Strout as already suggested.

I like The Dutch House by AP and Lucy by the Sea by ES

menopausalmare · 06/09/2024 22:32

How to make an American quilt. Was there a book of the film?
