Anyone else read this? I absolutely loved it - the characters were so well written, the pace, the weaving in and out of stories.

I read it earlier this year and really enjoyed it.

MelodyMalone · 21/08/2024 05:37

It was fabulous, and quite relatable for me as I grew up in the same area and time.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 21/08/2024 22:15

I don’t know many others who’ve read it - the characters have really stayed with me.

Loved it. Stayed with me also. My favourite book so far this year alongside Demon Copperhead.

Just reading it now.

Can I go against the grain and say I didn't like it?

I thought it read a bit like a YA book.

I know the narrator was naive and therefore unreliable but some of the inferences were just so heavy handed, it felt a bit patronising.

I was surprised that I didn’t like it - I’d read so many great reviews. I thought the ending didn’t need to be so depressing. Author did a great job of conveying the time though.

I agree the ending was a bit depressing! I'm not sure how I felt about it.

Overall though I loved it - at least partly because I had so many of the same reference points (I vividly recall the reign of terror of the Yorkshire Ripper). I thought there was a powerful message somewhere in there about not judging by appearances.

Oh that’s interesting. I didn’t read it like that - but I see what you mean. DD also loved it and she is 16, so a YA herself 😀
