I’m currently reading the Cazalet books and was wondering if those of you who have read them would recommend reading or skipping the final one as it seems to have rather mixed reviews.

It's not the same as the others and a bit sad that you know it's the end. But on the other hand it is based on real life.

I think it's still worth reading, but it is not the same quality as the previous four. There are some factual errors that contradict the previous books and a one rather grim storyline, that is slightly played for laughs. But I had become so invested in the characters I wanted to see what happened. Currently re reading the series, just started book 2, such brillant books.

CatChant · 18/08/2024 12:19

Don’t.

suburburban · 18/08/2024 12:19

What are the factual errors out of interest

I have read all the books but then you forget.

I liked the final book

Couldn't get over the price of the house though in the 50s

Blackcats7 · 18/08/2024 12:38

I was excited to read it but sort of wish I hadn’t. Much prefer the first four.

I've read but regretted it and wish EJH had left well alone instead of writing a fifth volume after a long gap, and shortly before her death.

I thought the characters were unrecognisable in places and behaved in ways inconsistent with how they appeared in the earlier books. Disappointing.

I will reread the first four again but prefer to pretend the last volume doesn't exist.

NotLeavingWithoutTheSpringRolls · 18/08/2024 17:36

Oh well maybe I’ll read it and see 🧐

I wouldn’t bother personally; I don’t regard it as canon. There are a lot of inconsistencies from the earlier books - plot details that have changed and people behaving out of character. There’s also a really bizarre incest-related plot line that I would definitely have advised her against if I was her editor. The first four books are so perfect - I wish she’d just left it at that.

I knew i shouldn't have but I couldn't resist. I shouldn't have and should have resisted! 😆

Latenightreader · 21/08/2024 13:32

I really didn’t like it and agree that there are quite a few actions completely out of character. It is probably worth reading for completeness but it made me really cross.

Gremlinsateit · 23/08/2024 09:42

I regret reading it but I expect it’s one of those mild disappointments that you have to experience for yourself.

Helloandgoodmorning2 · 24/08/2024 07:59

I wish I hadn’t bothered and when I re-read the series again I wont read the last one. It did spoil the series for me.

Notellinganyone · 24/08/2024 08:34

It’s nowhere near as good but as I’d read all the others there was no way I was going to miss it! The first three are wonderful but they dip after that with the final one being the weakest.
