The setting isn't modern but written in the 1980s?? - the Spoils of Time trilogy by Penny Vincenzi is very enjoyable.

About a family who own a publishing company, it starts in about 1905 and the last book ends in the 1960s I think.

The first book is called No Angel.

How about The Glass House by Eve Chase?
