What was this book? Disabled children abducted for "research"

I've just remembered a novel I read as a teenager that I found really upsetting. I can't for the life of me remember what it was called or who wrote it, and Google isn't helping.

I think a couple had been told that their baby was stillborn, but later discovered that it had been born with a severe and rare disability and abducted by a dodgy doctor and imprisoned in a secret facility for research/experiments. The couple eventually located the building, which held numerous profoundly disabled children who were subjected to horrific abuse. I seem to remember one of the children's condition involved them having no bones.

Does that ring any bells with anyone?

Hear the children calling?

No, although that looks like a closer match to the plot than anything I could find. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Your description makes it sound so familiar, I think I read this book! Have just spent an age trying to find through google but no luck I’m afraid.

In his early days (before the Roy Grace series) Peter James wrote a number of thrillers that featured odd pregnancies - could it be one of those?

That sounds like others by James Herbert.

That's it! Thank you so much, it had been driving me mad.
