Do I want an Oasis?

Tell me why they're better than a paperwhite.

Or is there another one that's better.

Nah. Just go for a paperwhite. I had a voyager which cost lots more than the PW bur honestly did nothing the PW didn't do.

I'd get another PW. If you can wait a bit there's Prime Days on 16th & 17th July

mrswarthog · 25/06/2024 22:20

Noooooo, mine died, DH bought me the Oasis for Christmas. Shit battery life, not 4G, can't cope in hot weather, long story short I now have a Paperwhite with a backup Oasis when I'm charging it 😆

pintofsnakebite · 25/06/2024 23:41

Great. Thank you- and i didn't know about the prime days. 😊

It’s so annoying that they cost £100 extra for ad free now. I cant imagine getting ads between chapters

Ads between chapters? Not just when the kindle has gone to sleep?

LemonRobin · 26/06/2024 00:00

Sorry I don’t know. I doubt they can actually manage to put them between chapters but either way it would annoy me

ForFirmBiscuit · 26/06/2024 00:01

I bought a kindle years ago and I still regret it. You have to pay every month to get anything on it but all the good books cost money individually anyway.

LightDrizzle · 26/06/2024 00:08

Paperwhite! Paperwhite! Paperwhite!

I lost mine last year and spend ages looking at all the options and I’m totally content with my decision to buy another Paperwhite.

WhimsicalMoth · 26/06/2024 00:24

I had an oasis given to me and I LOVE it !!
It was 70% charged when I got it about 3/4 weeks ago now, I've read it every day and it's not needed charging! I love that it has the buttons, similar to the first style kindles.

As for paying for books, there's a way to download pretty much any book you want for free, the software is out there, you need a computer to do it though.

fruitpastille · 26/06/2024 00:28

@ForFirmBiscuit why do you need to pay every month? I've got a kindle and I just buy the books I want.

You absolutely don't have to pay money every month. I've had a kindle for years and don't do this. I just pay for the books I decide to buy.

Are you sure you haven't inadvertently signed up for some sort of subscription service? Kindle Unlimited? You don't really need those.

Sounds like you're doing something wrong. Kindles don't have a monthly fee unless you sign up for Kindle Unlimited. That being the case tho that gives you loads of free books

Zonder · 26/06/2024 07:47

I've had kindles for years. Never paid a monthly fee, had many books free, and the only ads are when I first wake the kindle up and there's an ad for a book on the first page. Certainly none as I'm reading.

Zonder · 26/06/2024 07:48

I think someone made up the idea of ads between chapters!

No you don't! Just buy the books you want. I keep an eye on the Daily Deal which is books for 99p each, a bit random but there can be good ones there.

HoppingPavlova · 26/06/2024 07:53

Another confused as I just buy books when I want them, no monthly fee.

pintofsnakebite · 26/06/2024 08:03

Yes. I never sign up to Kindle Unlimited as they never have the books I want.

I just buy as I want them, usually for 99p.

If you have Amazon prime already you can get a free new release book once a month too. Amazon First Reads

TellySavalashairbrush · 30/06/2024 22:10

I lost my old paperwhite when I accidentally left it in a hotel room (staff said they knew nothing about it when I realised 12 hours later and called the hotel 🤔) I immediately had to get a new one on the credit card as I rely on it for reading in bed during the night (insomniac) . Yes they aren’t cheap, but I really love how practical they are .

Top tip:

Buy the Kids Paperwhite.

It's exactly the same as the normal one (just go into settings and switch off kids mode when you get it), but it comes with two year guarantee, a cover (I got the green forest one - not childish at all; there's also a black cover) and I think it automatically comes ad free.
