Hi friends,

I noticed people online have mentioned Dark Romance genre a lot recently. I also noticed people talk on it on Reddit (but I don't go there and I trust MN more).

So can I ask you? What is Dark Romance? Have you read any books? What's the appeal? Why do people like it? If you can, please share your thoughts 🙏

Please don't judge me for asking this question 🙈 I genuinely want to know but I'm too embarrassed to ask elsewhere.

Never heard of it, but a quick Google says romance stories with a bit of an edge - morally-grey characters, sometimes BDSM themes. I'm guessing 50 shades of grey maybe? The quick Google mentioned motorcycle gangs as well, so maybe sons of anarchy would fit in with the genre. Definitely an edge to that (I loved it btw)

It's basically non fluffy romance - the romantic interest can be a bit morally grey, there can be some themes people wouldn't enjoy (possessive etc). There's lots themed around mafia / gangs / fantasy style romances. It has a "dark" element vs the classic romance books that are sweet and light.

Makes me think of fanfiction and the Dramione I 'used' to read! 😆

It usually glorifies abusive relationships, stalking, and sexual abuse etc is portrayed as romantic. Haunting Adeline is the worst example I can think of.

Yes lots of abusive relationships in dark romance and other grim dark type categories.

However recently come across something that has a similar feel but with more assertive female lead characters and calling out of abusive patterns - Court of thorns and roses series and other series by Sarah J Maas

Thanks all for explaining it to me a bit better
