I’d suggest Prodigal Summer, or her very first novel The Bean Trees and its sequel Pigs in Heaven.

It depends what I'm in the mood for.

Best trashy detective novels: In Death series by J D Robb
Best urban Fantasy: Harry Dresden series by Jim Butcher
Best Young Adult: Diana Wynne Jones, especially Fire and Hemlock
Best horror: This is a tie between Phil Rickman and Stephen King
Best High Fantasy: Guy Gavriel Kay - Fionavar Tapestry
Best overall: Terry Pratchett

Louis de Bernieres
Jorge Amado
Jose Eduardo Agualusa

Louis de Bernieres and Jane Austen are the only two where I have read everything that I have been able to obtain that they have written.
