I've got into a bit of a history kick recently and fancy reading a book about the English Civil Wars. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Ideally something that's that's not too dry/academic and is an entertaining read!

If you like a good podcast Real Dictators has just done Oliver Cromwell, always interesting and narrated by Paul McGann which is a big plus. 😁

Another one for your list if you want to learn about what happened in the aftermath is Killers of the King by Charles Spencer.
It looks at how the restored monarchy pursued the regicides who had signed Charles I death warrant.

I can thoroughly recommend 'The Siege of Loyalty House' by Jessie Childs. It is centred around the siege of Basing House in the Civil War but goes into a lot of the history around the war.

For fiction, 'Gods vindictive wrath' by Charles Cordell is very good for bringing the actual feeling of battle to life, and 'The Oak Apple' by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles follows a Yorkshire family through the period of the war (its part of a series of book about the same family) and has more family and romance in it.

THANK YOU for your recommendation of 'Gods Vindictive Wrath's. Just finished it today and it is excellent!

Absolutely loved it & I see it's the first a series....might have to get the rest now Smile

Gin will do nicely! The second book in the series is due out in June (10th I think) and I'm really looking forward to it. Glad you enjoyed the first book!

Yes I saw that. Going to preorder it as soon as I get paid!
