For some reason I have got interested in this but aware of my lack of knowledge in it.

Thanks'

Aybss by Max Hastings.
Deals primarily with the Cuban missile crisis (possibly THE biggest flashpoint of the Cold War?) but does talk about so much more and gives a good insight into the way the world was at the time.

Ooops. I just bought a copy of @CanapeJane 's suggestion. I am a book addict.

There are quite a few 2nd hand copies of it on Abebooks, @Deathraystare at least four or five copies under £3.50 including p&p.

I've read quite a lot of fiction about it, John Le Carre, Len Deighton etc etc. They were written either during it or not long after it...and are great for a real feeling of the times.

If you ever get the chance to go to Berlin there's some great museums about the Cold War.
